This one is a total coin flip. I honestly think Old Dominion is the better team on paper, but GSU has home field, playoff experience & Laron Scott's big play potential on returns. Also, Heinicke doesn't appear to have much experience with big, hostile crowds. An ODU upset wouldn't shock me in the least, but I'll err on the side of being safe & gutless…

Here's my assessment of the matchups & my pick for the game:

      • Quarterbacks -- Old Dominion

        Running Backs - Georgia Southern

        Receivers/TEs - Old Dominion

        Offensive Line - Georgia Southern

        Defensive Line - (push)

        Linebackers --- Old Dominion

        Secondary ---- Georgia Southern

        Kicking ------ Georgia Southern

        Punting ------ Georgia Southern

        Return Teams - Georgia Southern

        Kickoffs ------ Georgia Southern

        • Old Dominion 31-34 Georgia Southern

Linebackers --- Old Dominion Not so sure about that.

Does anybody have a depth chart for ODU? I'd be curious to see the size match-ups on both lines.

Homerism much?

Kicking:

GSU and it's not even close.
Our kicker is 12 for 13 which is 92.3%
Yours is 14 for 21 which is 66.7%

Punting:

GSU by an extended country mile.
Your punter averages 46.12, but your punt defense team is ranked 105th in the nation. You have allowed 24 punt returns for 292 yards which is 12.17 yards per return.

On the other hand, our punter has only punted 27 times this season and averages 42.6 per punt. However, our punt defense team is ranked 28th and has only allowed 6 returns for a total of 34 yards (5.67 avg.) all season long.

GSU wins the special teams title rather easily. :thumb:

Punting in my mind includes what you do on 4th down. We have successfully run fake punts. We will line up with our regular offense as if we are going for the first down and have our QB quick kick it. (We did both against NSU). I was also factoring blocked punts since that would not necessarily show up in "return teams" or any of the other categories you listed.

Our kicker is OK. Some of his misses have been because of bad snaps/holds in lousy weather, or misses from long distance.

Sorry to nitpick, but a country mile is 3 yards long?

46 - 12 = 34 net
42 - 5 = 37 net

I could see if the difference was 6.93 or higher, but...

ODU better really prepare for GATA's return game...it's the only thing that kept them in the game against App and almost won the game for them. Their returners are very, very good. :notworthy:

That's simple. We will go with various onside kicks.

Blocked kicks have been omitted from the special teams discussion.

Again GSU is excellent, blocking 5 kicks in 2011...but ODU has blocked 10 (tied first in FCS).

Thanks big blue

They've got some big guys on the O-line. This could explain why Heinicke seems to have a 4 hours to sit in the pocket. At least from what I saw of the NS game. Its a good thing there's not a creature on earth that can stop the man bear pig.

WHY IS IT STILL THURSDAY? I'm ready to watch this motha on da espn3

*Edit the day of the week. Thought it was still wednesday...
