Re: UNI @ Montana...
Being a MLB in a Cover 2 defense leads to a lot of tackles in the 4-8 yard range. UNI doesn't do a ton of blitzing up the middle either due to Bootbhy eating that up....Heck, UNI doesn't blitz a lot to begin with. The UNI defense is very much set up to keep things in front and take the opportunities to cause TO's and problems when the other team presents them. It is exactly why UNI is has high in the TO margin at they are, and why LJ has forced 6 fumbles from his MLB spot.AZGrizFan wrote:kemajic wrote: Yeah, there wasn't a soul there when we played at Tennessee. 6900 at UNI last week; 22,000 in Missoula. It is a defense that drives the fan base batty a lot due to the yards that can be given up on plays that shouldn't give up big yards at times. It also drive the fan base crazy that our scheme allows WR's a free release and under route for the first 5-7 yards.
With that said, some how the defense has found ways to make plays at the right time this year, and I can't/won't complain about that.
UM and UNI are almost identical teams. It will be a very interesting battle.

In that case, they could have a long night trying to deal with the zone/read option that Johnson has been running to near-perfection as of late.clenz wrote:Being a MLB in a Cover 2 defense leads to a lot of tackles in the 4-8 yard range. Re: UNI @ Montana...
It doesn't really affect how the DB's play the run. They start 4 yards (on average) off the WR, and like every CB worth a damn playing football their first 2-3 steps are back peddles. The CB's aren't really needed for stopping the run in our set up. Boothby and Augie are pretty damn good at eating up G-C-G, and our ends have contain assignments. This is what allows our LB's to have the tackle numbers they do. They don't have many OL getting on them off the snap so they are able to read and scrape on run plays. The front 4 (as has been pointed out) has 22 of the 24 UNI sacks, what does that tell you about the strength of the front 4 for UNI?Grizalltheway wrote:In that case, they could have a long night trying to deal with the zone/read option that Johnson has been running to near-perfection as of late.clenz wrote:Being a MLB in a Cover 2 defense leads to a lot of tackles in the 4-8 yard range. It is a gap control defense. It's a "basic" defensive principle, but the intricacies of how the DL stunts, how the LB's scrape, how the zones overlap, etc... that make it a fairly effective defense.
The TO that Woffy ran was a bitch to contain, and while they put up a ton of yards they couldn't turn them into points - which is exactly what the defense has done this year. I've never watch a team run E/W as much as Woffy but pick up yards in chunks while doing it like Woffy did. I would watch a play from the endzone and it looked like the RB was going almost straight EW, but when he got hit he was 5-7 yards down field.
Like I said, these two teams are very very similar.

I don't doubt that they're very good, but I doubt they've faced an O-line as good as ours, outside of Iowa State or maybe NDSU. Very few sacks given up by them, and Johnson is a slippery bastard who can escape in the blink of an eye.clenz wrote:It doesn't really affect how the DB's play the run. One thing missing from your analysis is the more recent trends. Montana might be allowing 19.8/game, but the last four have been 10/7/10/14. And four straight games under 300 yards total offense allowed. UNI, on the other hand, has numbers that have trended higher having allowed MORE than their average points in each in the past five weeks.clenz wrote: Like I said, these two teams are very very similar.

Re: UNI @ Montana...
Point being, he is exceptionally difficult to sack. He can escape toward the sideline and does not hesitate to throw the ball away, which hurts his passing %, but keeps a lot of drives alive. Montana has given up a total of nine sacks, most of them midseason when Johnson was hampered by an ankle sprain .Silenoz wrote:Johnson's our QB

You act as though UNI has been given up 30 points per game...the last 4 have been 17-21-20 (OT game in which regular score was 13)-21, prior to that it was 27, and then it was 10-14-9-7-10-23-20.AZGrizFan wrote:One thing missing from your analysis is the more recent trends. Only twice this year has UNI given up more than 21, only once more than 23, and never more than 27. Hell, UNI's defense has never allowed more than 3 TD's in a single game to be completely honestly.
UNI's defense is better than you are given them credit for....then again I need to remember who I'm quoting on this one. You would pick the Alaska School of the Deaf Dumb Blind and Paralyzed to beat UNI.
