Frisco Serendipity

Post by JohnStOnge »

I remember a couple of years ago discussion on FCS boards about whether or not the championship game should be moved to Frisco. I remember that some people said Eastern teams dominated. Montana was the only team from west of the Mississippi that had won a national title since Northeast Louisiana won it in 1987. So on and so forth.

Well, last year, Eastern Washington won the national title. Now we're guaranteed that a team from west of the Mississippi will win this year. BOTH teams are from west of the Mississipi. Moreover, a Southland team from Texas will be in the championship game.

I don't know if this will continue. But it's amazing. Maybe the NCAA consulted Madam SeeTheFuture or something.

I don't know, but in the three years I've been following the FCS, it always seems like the bracket is separated into East/West of the Mississippi, with maybe one or two teams from a different geographical location sprinkled into each. It seems pretty certain that most years, it'll be a West vs. East thing because the odds that an eastern team comes out of the west bracket, and vice-versa, isn't very good. I mean, here's how the last twenty years have played out:

2011: W-W
2010: E-W
2009: E-W
2008: E-W
2007: E-E
2006: E-E
2005: E-W
2004: E-W
2003: E-E
2002: E-W
2001: E-W
2000: E-W
1999: E-W
1998: E-E
1997: W-W
1996: E-W
1995: E-W
1994: W-W
1993: E-W
1992: E-W

East-West: 13
East-East: 4
West-West 3

So overall, it's probably a good decision if we want to base it on geography. However, I'd argue that the East coast has many more programs with larger fan bases (if we don't count SWAC programs).

I count East Texas as part of the South.

But, it's all good... I guess a lot of people go with the Mississippi River as the dividing line. In that case the FBS title game will be between a west coast team (LSU) and an east coast team (Alabama).

LSU is east of the Mississippi River. or more precisely, on the east bank of the river

As far as East/West of the Mississippi River is concerned, I live East of the River, but West (and north) of UNI, a school West of the Mississippi. :coffee:

If you want to be more precise they're not really on the east bank of the river. Southern's campus is actually on the river. :ugeek:

Frisco was a great move. It was much better than I thought it would be, though I ambivalent about the move. As the years go by, it should be an even better experience for the teams and fans.

Eh, two years is not a trend. Furthermore, EWU was 1000 miles from Frisco so it's not like there's a trend of local teams making it.

I lived in the Western US for several years and I've driven coast to coast four times. I'm good with scale. "Out there" is no mystery to me. :thumb:

That was more directed at 89 than you. I get the feeling he hasn't been west of Cincinnati. :geek: :geek:

I thought it's only 2500 from coast to coast, so I went with half +/- a factor of 6.93. :coffee:

Knowing the NCAA, about the time us fans get used to it, they'll move it again.
