Hoping the third time will be the charm, President Barack Obama named former Washington Gov. Gary Locke as his nominee for Commerce secretary Wednesday.
"I'm sure it's not lost on anyone that we've tried this a couple of times. But I'm a big believer in keeping at something until you get it right," Obama said, standing with the fellow Democrat in the Indian Treaty Room at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House.
The president's two top earlier choices for the post dropped out — one a Democrat facing questions about a donor and the other a Republican who had a change of heart about working for a president from the opposition party — well before the Senate had a chance to confirm them.
Obama praised Locke as a man who shares his vision for turning around the economy, and someone who knows the American dream. "He's lived it and that's why he shares my commitment to do whatever it takes to keep it alive in our time," Obama said.

Fairly decent summary of Locke's tenure as Governor in WA. Starts of as an apologist puff piece, but gets into the nitty gritty. My observations:
A technocrat who's methodical sometimes to a fault.
A reactionary rather than a visionary (not good for Commerce Sec.).
Sometimes acts too slow, but rarely err's by acting rashly (A plus for Commerce Sec.).
Died in the wool liberal. Is a walking "Democrat talking point" man. (Hope he doesn't try to be a quasi-HHS Sec. from the Commerce Dept.)
Not a good track record at implementing reform, but was thoughtful in representing his states interests when proposing reform.
Absolutely 100% Democrat, so Emmanuel should recuse himself from the Census debacle, before it turns into a bigger bombshell that could easily become the "device" Reps use to knock out Obama in 2012.
Locke's appointment appears to be a political payback after his career ending 2003 Democrat response to Bush's State of the Union. Not saying that's wrong...as the threats against himself and his family were wrong on ALL levels, so, his reintroduction to "the fold" is justified.
On the periphery, however, he is another Obama EC (Yale/Boston College) appointee (Note to Obama: You won't melt into a pile of sugar if you travel west of the Mississippi...really...I've tried it...and survived. PS, there are actually some intelligent folk out there, or so I've heard...)

Sh!t hits the fan for Locke...
The sound of Obama's nomination of Locke is still echoing over America, and the sh!t has already hit the fan...
Conservative Columnist/Blogger/TV Commentator Michelle Malkin had done an extensive investigative report on then Governor Locke while she was still employed for the Seattle Times in the late '90's. As a result of some of her work, Locke was investigated by both the State of Washington and the FBI for campaign fundraising violations. Most notably, his relationship with now-convicted racketeer John Huang. She recapped the investigation, along with links to the original articles and pertinent supporting links on her website today...
(a lengthy read...but the summation forbodes dark times for Locke's nomination...)

One more not so little tidbit that will be hard for Locke to explain...
(...and before the Donkma's post the de rigeur sneer insult about Malkin's credibility: 1) State what's incorrect about her information. 2) Explain why, if she was incorrect, Locke returned the money and has acknowledged Huang's dubious motives. This is over-the-top disqualification evidence for a Commerce Secretary, unless, of course, Malkin's correct and the press suppresses the news to squelch any public outcry.)

How prophetic......Though Huang and his wife gave token personal donations to Locke totaling a mere $1,000, Huang is no casual acquaintance of Locke or his out-of-state fund-raising staff. As reported here previously, Huang helped organize May 1996 galas involving Locke at the Mayflower Hotel and Sheraton Carlton in Washington, D.C.; three fund-raisers at restaurants in Los Angeles, and an extravaganza at the Universal City, Calif., Hilton in October 1996 that raised upwards of $30,000.
In the Washington Post, Boston Globe and Dallas Morning News, Locke steadfastly defended his Huang-linked funds. He persistently invoked the race card to deflect criticism and castigated the national media for aggressively investigating those who benefited from the fund-raising of the then-presumed-innocent-now-self-confessed-felon Huang.
At a gathering of Asian-American journalists, Locke recently lamented: “The fund-raising scandal will have repercussions for several years. It will make our efforts doubly hard to get Asian Americans appointed to top-level positions across the United States. If they have any connection to John Huang, those individuals will face greater scrutiny and their lives will be completely opened up and examined - perhaps more than usual.”
One more not so little tidbit that will be hard for Locke to explain...
