Didn't say anywere that JoPa didn't know it wasn't wrong. It was more on how he handled the situation. He didn't handle it with any type of urgency. He passed it on to his superiors for someone else to deal with. For example, If he dealt with it immediately and took the reigns to get this dealt with, then I would say he had an idea of how society looked upon child molestation.

Joe Paterno did a heck of a lot more good than bad in his career: ran a clean program, graduated almost 90% of his players, and won games. Yes, he made a serious mistake at the end, but that doesn't consign him to the seventh circle of hell.

Joe PA should never have been allowed to coach that long. Should have retired 12 years earlier, forced to if he couldn't have been talked into it, before his legacy was tarnished by 4 losing seasons in 5 00'-04' and then the Sandusky situation.

85 yr old man, 75 when the incident was reported to him. He grew up in the 30's and 40s when this sort of thing never happend...(of course it happened, but wasn't talked about). He was ignorant because people of his era were ignorant about this type of thing.

From the Washington Post interview (link on the other thread):
"....And then I called my superiors and I said: ‘Hey, we got a problem, I think. Would you guys look into it?’ Cause I didn’t know, you know. We never had, until that point, 58 years I think, I had never had to deal with something like that. And I didn’t feel adequate.”.....

At the preliminary hearing for Curley and Schultz on Dec. 16, McQueary said he had been reluctant to go into similar “great detail about sexual acts” with Paterno, out of respect for the coach, who was 75 at the time......

......Paterno has said, “In hindsight, I wish I had done more.”

Paterno’s portrait of himself is of an old-world man profoundly confused by what McQueary told him, and who was hesitant to make follow-up calls because he did not want to be seen as trying to exert any influence for or against Sandusky. “I didn’t know which way to go,” he said. “And rather than get in there and make a mistake . . .”

He reiterated that McQueary was unclear with him about the nature of what he saw — and added that even if McQueary had been more graphic, he’s not sure he would have comprehended it.

LAME LAME LAME. My dad is 81 and I'm pretty sure he would know what to do with information like was given to JoPa. This is the biggest fucking cop-out in the world and, in my mind DOES consign him to the 7th circle of hell.

Good point. Of course Paterno had cancer, but neither one probably knew how to live without football. Kind of like Shawshank Redemption.
