Statement from UND President Robert Kelley about Fighting Sioux nickname and logo:
"In keeping with state law and the direction of North Dakota State Board of Higher Education President Grant Shaft, the University of North Dakota has resumed the use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo for our athletic teams. I want to reaffirm our respect for the laws of the state and the processes guaranteed under the North Dakota Constitution."
Ah yes now the great people of North Dakota get to spend tax dollars to have to vote on the ballot issue of to make the "Fighting Sioux" nickname a state law or not.
Other than NDSU and Sioux fans what are your thoughts on this? Do you think a State Law trumps NCAA rules if this passes?
PLEASE DO NOT POST JBB AND LAKESBISON WE KNOW WHERE YOU STAND
He said he has “told the university they shouldn’t take further action toward retiring the name,” but not to take other action beyond resuming use of the name “until we know what the board does next week.”
Basically the SBoHE is telling UND go ahead and call yourselves the UND Fighting Sioux but do NOT re-issue merchandise licences or put up new logos. I have a feeling the petitions will NOT stand. The NDAG, and the SBoHE will be working over this weekend to find something to shoot this down. This is just a hockey only crowd vs the UND athletics fans. The hockey only crowd doesn't care about the Big Sky or football or think Doug Fullerton is full of shit for threatening to boot UND from the conference. Then you have the UND athletics crowd (which I am for) we believe this petition and the bringing back the name and logo is going to destroy UND athletics by getting booted from the BSC forcing UND football into the Independent League and the GWC for other sports (if the GWC still exists). IMO its a sad day for UND sports.
Dear FSM, this is going to turn into another shit show thread real soon.

"What I'm saying is: You might have taken care of your wolf problem, but everyone around town is going to think of you as the crazy son of a bitch who bought land mines to get rid of wolves."
Obviously I don't have anything to lose so I'm glad someone is standing up to that NCAA crap. I've watched one school after another capitulate to that ridiculous edict and am glad one state is showing some stones by resisting.
Another thing is that I think the "Fighting Sioux" thing is a special tradition along the lines of Florida State's "Seminole" nickname. I strongly suspect that only a small minoirty of Sioux have any problem with it and it is absurd to disrput the tradition.

I guarantee that if this does get on the ballot it will pass. The average uninformed North Dakota voter will not know the repercussions. They will see basically this question "should UND keep the fighting sioux nickname?" and they will vote yes.
And then there's the puzzling, unique case of North Dakota. In 1930, the University of North Dakota (UND) adopted "Sioux" as its nickname for its sports teams. UND teams then became the Fighting Sioux in the 1960s. Spirit Lake, the Sioux reservation closest to the University of North Dakota's campus in Grand Forks, overwhelmingly backs the name. The tribe argues, and evidence seems to support the case, that Spirit Lake and another local Sioux reservation, Standing Rock, actually gave UND its blessing to use the nickname in a religious ceremony over 40 years ago.
Standing Rock's tribal council has voted to eliminate the name. The council, however, has not put the question to a full tribal vote, to the dismay of Standing Rock members who like the Fighting Sioux. "Aw, man, it's not right for people not to have a say," says Archie D. Fool Bear, a member of Standing Rock. Fool Bear says he has petition signatures from 1,000 Standing Rock residents opposing the nickname change, and he is confident his side would prevail in a full vote. Calls to the home and office of Charlie Murphy, chairman of the Standing Rock tribal council, were not returned.

They will stand, there will be a state-wide vote in June, and it will pass by an overwhelming margin. The ignorance of the population of North Dakota is staggering. It perplexes me to know that there are at the very least 17,000 residents of the state that are willing to throw UND under the bus for the sake of an abstract moniker. Unless the State Board of Higher Education can intervene via the Supreme Court, the University of North Dakota will suffer long term competetive disadvantages along with the remote chance that the Big Sky will expel them from the league in the future.

Its not surprising when the REA can fit almost 12,000 Sioux hockey fans, plus how many Bison fans signed it to get rid of UND athletics. They were at the Fargodome during the FCS playoffs, plus they were at the West Acres Mall too. That sayanything.com is so full of lies its not even funny. Monday we should see if the SBoHE is going to challenge this in court.

Now here is where I have the problem. Darrell you drag Bison fans into this mess. I for one don't give a rip but the bottom line is this is UND's shitstorm. UND fans are the ones who stood outside anywhere anyone would let them to get signatures. You want to look for blame look in your own backyard. UND needs to clean up it's own house. UND supporters ( I'm grouping all UND fans Hockey or no Hockey) in thsi statement. Its folks like Ralph E. who pushed this years ago and now it's folks like Reed Soderstrom or Phil Harmeson that continue on the fight. Go ahead if it makes you feel any better and blame NDSU and it's fans but this is UND's mess or their own making. Bottom line is your own people have carried this on far to long and no matter how high a mountain top you want to yell "it's NDSU's fault" won't make it true.
I hope they keep the name its just a name and when you look at it from an intellectual standpoint there is no reason not to keep it. If anyone is offended that is their problem and this country needs to stop catering to the minority and go with the majority.

don't try to pin this on bison fans. Each time I walked by those tables at the fargodome they were empty, but the guy collecting signatures was begging for people to stop and sign.
Even just this past weekend we went to disney on ice at the bismarck civic center and I was wearing my bison jacket. The guy begged me to sign, saying no mascot is safe and that peta will be coming for the bison next. I said I wasn't worried and just walked by.

Unfortunately, UND already has one strike against it when it comes to joining the Big Sky. Thank you, USD (but they have their own valid reasons). The team formerly and now again known as the Fighting Sioux need a conference home of the quality of the Big Sky, and some people just don't get it. If this nickname thing doesn't go away, and the Big Sky decides 10/12 teams is better than 11/13 with the odd team, UND athletics will be in a world of hurt. And no, most of the Sioux fans do not believe that the Big Sky needs UND more than UND needs the Big Sky.
BB: I don't think the issue is with you, per se, or most of the other Bison fans. It's the swill spewed by the two trolls who claim allegiance to your school and give you guys a major black eye. I think we'd all be happy if there were a way to stuff them in a broom closet somewhere while simultaneously honoring the good sportsmanship the rest of you display (especially those like WyoBisonMan, a poster of the best quality) on a daily basis. We've just about had it up to HERE with those dummies, however.

That was my point. Over on Bisonville in the Sioux nickname thread there are hundreds of posts of Bison fans saying where is that petition I will sign it to get rid of UND sports. That is why I brought up about Bison fans...also why would the petitioners go to the Fargodome during a Bison game or to West Acres. At least you may catch some UND fans at the mall but at a Bison playoff game?? Seems a little fishy there.
