Re: Georgia State to the Sun Belt?
Interesting. Ga St. was destined for some crappy FBS league from the start.
What does this mean for CAA football? Nothing competitively obviously.

I wonder how much the CAA is paying the SunBelt to extend Ga. State an invitation?

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

The biggest issue here is finding new homecoming games for the remaining CAA football teams.

In an interview after the first spring practice, Ambrose basically said he thought ODU was the best team in the league. And that Towson's comeback, proved to him that our team had a really good chance at making the post-season.

Now we'll never get a chance to beat their behinds...they'll be too busy cashing checks getting their butts kicked by BCS teams and not getting invited to any better FBS conferences.

bye bye GaStU
Re: Georgia State to the Sun Belt?
First of all, congrats to Georgia State. The CAA was never the right fit anyways and this is much better. I hope they have a good time in the Sunbelt (after the CAA destroys them in football next season) and that they enjoy new rivalries (South Alabama?) and etc.
Otherwise, to answer the question above, the CAA will definitely make a move and that school will have football.

Do you think North or South?
I think the schools in place are probably (in no order):
Albany
Stony Brook
Maine (full membership)
New Hampshire (full membership)
Coastal Carolina
Anyone else?

Re: Georgia State to the Sun Belt?
So may depend on what the A-10 does. If they go after VCU and GMU, and those schools accept, CAA would be down to nine - not a good number - still could add one, but three would be more likely
Re: Georgia State to the Sun Belt?
I personally would like Appalachian State (or Charlotte), but I think an invite will be extended to a northern team, with Stony Brook and Albany being the top candidates. Of course, Coastal Carolina will also be in the mix. Who knows though...the CAA might extend an offer to more than one team to protect itself from a future raid.

Re: Georgia State to the Sun Belt?
Albany and Stony Brook would be a tidy package deal.
Albany had two big football obstacles: scholarships and stadium. Stadium is no longer an obstacle. Scholarships is no longer as big of an obstacle considering that Albany will be at 40 full scholarships before the move occurred and could, according to everything we alumns have been told, jump to 63 tomorrow if an opportunity arose.
Stony Brook has the facilities and finances already down so no issue there.
How does Hofstra feel about Stony Brook in the same league?

Re: Georgia State to the Sun Belt?
IMO, I don't see a rush to expansion in either the CAA or CAA FB, unless GMU and VCU leave the CAA this summer. If that happens, the probability of expansion increases.
Re: Georgia State to the Sun Belt?
To be blunt, I don't think anyone cares about what Hofstra thinks. They've got wrestling and women's softball going for them, but that's about it since they've dropped football. They probably won't be happy at all, but their opinion is definitely low on the CAA totem-poll (especially after their president publicly said he wants into the A-10 last year...foolish move since they're never going to get that invite).danefan wrote:How does Hofstra feel about Stony Brook in the same league?

I'd say Stony Brook or Coastal Carolina will fill the gap.

Re: Georgia State to the Sun Belt?
Maine hosts Georgia State in November... this should be fun.
IMO, this is perfect for everyone involved. Now, the CAA needs to get Stony Brook on board and move to all sports ASAP.

Looks like CBS is jumping the gun:

Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson said his conference hasn’t decide to invite Georgia State, and that he will not be in Atlanta on Thursday.
Benson’s comments contradict a report on CBSSports.com that the presidents of the Sun Belt voted earlier this week to invite Georgia State, and that Benson will be in Atlanta on Thursday to likely extend an invitation.
