Ex-UR coach Scott a candidate for position on JMU staff

Former University of Richmond coach Latrell Scott, who resigned after being charged with DWI, is a candidate for a position on the James Madison University staff, Dukes coach Mickey Matthews confirmed today.

Matthews chose not to elaborate, other than to say he is considering Scott as an offensive assistant. That vacancy is expected to be filled next week, according to Matthews.

A spokesman for Morgan State University recently confirmed that Scott is a candidate for a position on the Bears’ staff.

Scott, a Lee-Davis High and Hampton University graduate, directed the Spiders to a 6-5 record in 2010, his first season as a head coach at any level.

Scott resigned as UR’s coach on Aug. 23 last year after being charged with DWI in Henrico County. He was found guilty in November, and has completed a 10-day sentence that was required because Scott was previously convicted of DWI while a VMI assistant in 2004.

Scott, 36, could not be reached for comment. He worked on staffs at UR, Western Carolina, VMI, Tennessee and Virginia before being hired as the Spiders’ head coach on Dec. 15, 2009.

In a November interview, Scott said he hoped to be able to resume his coaching career.

“Football has been part of my life for the last 25 years, and it’s something I’m good at,” Scott said. “I think what I’ve got to do now is put myself in a situation to prove to people that I’m the same person that I’ve always been. I made a terrible error in judgment.”

I. Would be a great recruiter for a couple of reasons:

One, he has familiarity, ties & relationships throughout the state of VA
-Grew up in Richmond, VA where he played HS ball
-Played at Hampton
-Was an assistant at among VA schools UR, VMI, UVA
-HC at Richmond about a yr & a half

Two, being young black man will help with the black recruits, another assest to recruiting

He had 2 recruiting classes at UR. '10 on paper at least was an outstanding one and '11 was a good one also. (Course the results haven't shown on the field as those are only 1st and 2nd yr players, and with UR having their 5th HC in 6 seasons, they've lost a lot of players).

II. From what I've heard, he happens to be an excellent coach.

III. Apparently has, or at least had, a problem with alcohol.

Should he ever be given the opportunity to coach again at the collegiate level? IMHOP Yes.
Should JMU hire him? On the fence. If it hadn't had the issues Dec '10-last month, I would say yes. But with the issues JMU has had, I'm not sure if this is the right time.

My bad. Knew Scott had grown up in the Richmond area & played at Lee Davis HS. Was an assistant at UR & HC at UR. For some reason I was thinking he played at UR. Fixed it.

Speaking of Lee Davis HS and UR, both my mom and dad graduated from Lee Davis HS back in the mid 60s, & my dad went to UR (played football at Lee Davis but not UR).

HARRISONBURG, VA – Former Richmond football coach Latrell Scott has been hired as the tight ends coach at James Madison, Dukes head coach Mickey Matthews announced Friday.

Scott led Richmond to a 6-5 record in his first season as head coach in 2010, including a win over Virginia. He was forced to resign in the week leading up to the 2011 opener following an arrest for drunk driving.

He fills the full-time slot at JMU left by the departure of J.C. Price, now the defensive line coach at Marshall University.

"When I look to fill a position on our staff, I always want to fill it with the best available coach and I believe we have done that with Latrell," Matthews said. "He has a proven ability to coach and recruit and comes highly recommended by everyone and every place he has been. He has made some mistakes and has taken responsibility for them. He is an excellent teacher and recruiter and we are extremely happy to have him in the JMU Nation."

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join Coach Matthews' staff," Scott said. "The one thought I have is to be the best coach and recruiter I can be and to be a good example for the members of the present JMU team. I am excited to get on the field and coaching again."

Scott brings 12 years of coaching experience to JMU, including the 2008 and 2009 seasons as the wide receivers coach at Tennessee and Virginia, respectively.

He is a 1999 graduate of Hampton, where he was a tight end in the football program.
