CSU Names Applin 15th Women's Basketball Coach in Program History

Applin Introduced as Head Women's Basketball Coach

Charleston Southern Names Fred Applin as New Women's Basketball Coach
Charleston Southern introduced Fred Applin as its new head coach for women’s basketball today, bringing in a coach with an extensive background at some of the top programs in the country.

Applin comes to CSU from East Carolina, where he served the last two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He also has coached at North Carolina, Wake Forest, Houston, Washington and Texas, as well as a brief stint as the head coach at Hampton University.

“Fred Applin is a great fit for Charleston Southern,” said CSU athletic director Hank Small. “We had 79 applicants for the position and Fred stood out from the start.

“He has outstanding Division I experience and has worked with some of the greatest coaches and players in the profession. He is known as an excellent recruiter and has head coaching experience as well. Most importantly, Fred will represent the University and its mission well to both our players and our community.”

Applin inherits a women’s program that is currently at its highest level in the school’s history. Two of CSU’s four best seasons in terms of victories came in the last three years when the program posted two 17-win seasons under former coach Julie Goodenough, who resigned in March to accept a position at Abilene Christian College in Texas.
What they’re saying about Fred Applin…

“I think Fred is an outstanding hire for Charleston Southern. Not only is he a standout coach and recruiter, but he is an even better Christian man who will serve both the school and the community in a first-class way. He was here with us when we were first getting started at Carolina and he helped build the foundation of our national championship team. I wish him nothing but the best of luck in this exciting opportunity.”

- Sylvia Hatchell, Head Coach – UNC-Chapel Hill

“Fred has so much experience and is a great professional that I know he will be successful in building a great program at Charleston Southern. He’s a great recruiter and communicator and I have a great deal of respect for him, I know he will build a winner.”

- Mike Peterson, Head Coach – North Texas

“We are thrilled for Fred and Cora as they prepare to embark on this new journey. Fred will be a definite asset to the Charleston Southern women’s basketball program as well as the community.”

- Heather Macy, Head Coach – East Carolina University

I don't know much about him, but I trust the leadership and if they think he is the man for the job then I can't argue. He certainly brings excellent credentials. Coach Julie Goodenough is a very good coach. She did great things at CSU and built a strong foundation. She left the program in EXCELLENT shape.

Coach Applin said...
“I’ve known Julie for 13 years, and when I asked her about this program, she said it was a gold mine,” said Applin. “Having been here and seen what’s going on, meeting some of the players and meeting with others about the vision of this program and this university, I have to say I agree with her assessment.

“We have a great opportunity here at Charleston Southern to not only be a very successful basketball program on the floor, but also to make a huge impact on the school and this community. I’m so excited about this opportunity.”

CSU’s roster did not have a senior last season, and the Lady Bucs are expected to contend for the Big South title next season. Applin anticipates having a team that plays fast offensively, plays pressure defense and rebounds.

“I think the biggest thing is getting some size and being able to rebound with the better teams in the Big South,” Applin said. “I hope to use my contacts around the country and internationally to bring in more height, but equally important to me is to bring in players who match the vision of this university as student-athletes.”
