SB and ALBANY. PLEASE!!!!! lol
It just makes sense. Besides the New York market that people pointed out already, it adds a great rivalry (SBU-UA) in every sport and would resume a geographical rivalry between (SBU-HU) in everything except football.
I'm starting to believe that Albany and Stony Brook should move together anywhere they go. These games are exciting between both schools. There is a lot of hate among the student bodies, and its definitely the best intrastate rivalry in NY among the public schools.

SB & Albany want in. Let them in. Move the conference hoops tourney to Baltimore or Philly. Create the 2nd best lax league in the country.
Good riddance to the programs disinterested in supporting football.

If all hell break through as some are thinking, maybe the AE invites their old counterparts back. Not sure UD would go back though.

whatever happens, I just want Stony Brook to be in a conference that has all their sports. I don't hate the AE. I like our current conference members, I just hate the fact that we don't have football. CAA football is fantastic and I would love having MAINE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, STONY BROOK, and ALBANY playing in the same conference

Neither GSU nor App. State are going to the CAA...we're just not strong enough in basketball and we're both flirting with the idea of moving football to the FBS.Skjellyfetti wrote:Fuck that. I can't say what Charlie Cobb is thinking... but, fuck the SoCon. I want out. And I think A LOT of other App fans feel the same way. I don't feel tied to any of the other SoCon school much at all. Western is forced to be our rivalry... but, I couldn't care less about maintaining that rivalry.SuperHornet wrote:I think App is probably too tied to the other SoCon schools to go for it.
I would go to the CAA without hesitation.

ODU's basketball program is not going to be happy replacing VCU and GMU with SB and Albany. ODU has a good basketball program as well and the CAA as a basketball league will be taking a huge hit.State Line Liquors wrote:SB & Albany want in. Let them in. You have some suggestion for a school(s) with a basketball program, and a fully funded athletic department?DJnVa wrote:ODU's basketball program is not going to be happy replacing VCU and GMU with SB and Albany. I'm not over the moon with any of the options I've heard, but if the intention of the CAA is to continue to exist, then they should be looking to add partners with both basketball and FCS football teams. If the plan is to fold this thing up in a couple years, then the plan should be to add nobody or add schools that don't have the resources or ball bags to fund a football program.

You guys are beating your brains out over the CAA's next step. There will be many others after that, so the next step will not matter so much.
There was a secret meeting between several schools recently regarding football. ECU, Charlotte, JMU, Appy St., and Delaware were among those in attendance. ODU was not there although they were invited. The only reason they did not attend was because the ODU President is the CAA rep for the NCAA and it just would not be right to be in attendance. But that doesn't mean that ODU is not interested, or did not "participate". To me, the interesting thing about this is the interest level of Delaware. Looks like they are at least willing to talk about a move up.
I'm trying to dig up more information on this meeting, and future meetings.

It would be completely foolish for UD not to attend that meeting if they were invited.CAA Flagship wrote:You guys are beating your brains out over the CAA's next step. There will be many others after that, so the next step will not matter so much.

I don't think there's any question that UD fans love FCS/1-AA football. Let's face it, this level of football has been very good to us through the years. But the ramifications of what is potentially taking place in the collegiate athletics landscape would dictate that you have to understand and be open to a plethora of options. Potentially participating in a football league with the above mentioned programs, and likely a few others would be a highly attractive option in my opinion, and worthy of the expense I make supporting UD athletics. Given the fundraising effort for improvements to the West Stands at Delaware stadium, you'd have to think that UD would be very interested in protecting their investment. Objective A#1 for UD athletics must always be doing what is best for UD Football.

Right...CAA Flagship wrote:You guys are beating your brains out over the CAA's next step. There will be many others after that, so the next step will not matter so much.

Hey. I'm handing you inside info and you are poo-pooing me.
This is your opportunity to ask YOUR contacts specifically about this meeting to see if you can add to the information.
Or you can sit and wait to see if anyone else has better contacts that will continue the discussion.
Trust me. It happened.

1. UD isn't smart enough to know how to conduct regular meetings, let alone secret meetings.
2. ECU isn't going to have ANY meetings with those schools listed.
3. Why would anyone have a secret meeting with Charlotte when they haven't played a single football game yet?
Like I said...

It looks like for at least 2012-13 that VCU is staying, doesn't mean that 18-24 months from now the CAA could look vastly different. I'd look for the official Stony Brook announcement before CAA Media Day in July.

VCU is choking on Shaka Smart's salary. That is the primary reason that they can't make the move to the A-10 because they would forfeit the NCAA distrbution if they left the CAA. They offered Smart a huge salary based on the fact that they knew they would be getting that NCAA money. But it all goes through the CAA and if they are not a member, the remaining members divide it up. The other reason that they are not joining the A-10 is that the remaining top teams in the A-10 could get raided to join Big East defectors (non-football schools). Take away Temple, Xavier, and Dayton and the CAA looks like the better place to be (and at that point, assuming Charlotte is also gone, Richmond would beg back into the CAA).

Re: If the CAA loses VCU & GMU who do they add to get back t
JPs post about the NCAA shares on the csi board
Another reason the NCAA loot is less of a hold-up that we'd expect for these three:
The newcomer's shares are front-loaded, and Temple's shares are more spread out (5-6-6-5-5-3-1).
So while VCU, GMU and Butler are expecting to pull in a combined value of 10.2 more units than Temple (41.2 to 31); Temple's 31 units have a higher average value:
NEW THREE AVG SHARE VALUE: $304,517.12
TEMPLE'S AVG SHARE VALUE: $310,307.39
Throw in Temple's exit fee, and the A-10 is basically FIVE shares short of covering their earnings, not 10.2 shares short.
Take all the expected payouts from those three ($12,536,056), and each's schools percentage of that expected payout (Butler 22.25%, GMU 22.04%, VCU 55.69%) and give them that percentage of Temple's earnings/exit fee ($10,619,529) and the REAL COST to each school to switch leagues is:
Butler would lose $426,616.17
Mason would lose $422,520.08
VCU would lose $1,067,391.14
For Butler and George Mason, that's ONE-FIFTH of a future NCAA bid.
For VCU, it's ONE-HALF of a future NCAA bid.
It's a calculated gamble that being in the A-10 would mean one more future NCAA bid than they'd get in the Horizon or CAA.
For Mason, that's a no-brainer decision. The CAA's gotten four at-larges in a decade. The 16-team A-10 could get four a year.
For Butler, it's a tougher sell because they won the Horizon so frequently.
But there's also attendance/revenue considerations. The A-10 schedule is going to be more of a draw. TV revenue will be higher (Travel will be slightly higher), and recruiting is going to get better.
All in all, those figures above are acceptable losses for the benefits of A-10 membership.
But mainly, those three should go because of the Opportunity Cost of saying no.
It's foolish NOT TO parlay the Final Four runs into a better conference. If they don't go now, maybe next time it's Detroit and Drexel who get the invite. You have to assume you'll never be back to the Final Four, so cash in while you can.

Some of you guys communicate as if these universities were running professional basketball outfits. While men's hoops in unquestionably important, they also have 14-20 other revenue sucking sports to think about.
Sure, trips to St. Louis, etc. once a year for VCU's or GMU's MBB might not break their AD budgets but what about the other sports teams they'll have to ship out there as a result of an A-10 affiliation? What about the class time missed by their student-athletes? Oh, that's right, the desire for their MBB program to be in a marginally more competitive conference trumps all common sense and fiscal responsibility.
