1 objection ends Bible tradition in Big Timber

Post by hank scorpio »

This is a letter to all Christians and people who know our country was founded on religious freedoms. The churches of Big Timber have given Sweet Grass County High school graduates Bibles every year for graduation. This year, one student and his/her parents objected, and now the high school has decided not to give out the Bibles.

How can one student out of a class of about 50 change the decision without even listening to the other 49 students? It has always been the policy of the school that the student can refuse the Bible or return it after the ceremony.

This is the same percentage that has been ruling our country. This person does not even have the courage to stand up for what he/she believes. It was an anonymous request.

I am deeply disappointed by the superintendent and school board, because they have not had the decency to stand up. I think this is a topic everyone across Montana and the nation should read about as we slowly let the majority of us lose our rights to the small percentages of people who have big mouths and nothing to say. Look at gay marriage, gay adoption, taking God off our money and out of our schools. No pledge of allegiance to honor the people who have fought and died for us. We can't even take a quiet moment of our own school day to thank God for what, where and who we are. Wake up, people.

If some one wants a bible, go to a church and ask for one.

Would the school also be willing to hand out Korans, Jehovah's Witness tracts, L. Ron Hubbard books, etc?

Now the way I read the story, the ceremony is simply the distribution point...it's not the school system purchasing it and giving it...

So, if someone can refuse the Bible (which the story indicates has happened in the past) why is there any issue...the program does not violate any Constitution...just some weak administrators bailing on the first sign of being challenged...

If my kid went to this school system, we would refuse the Bible because it's most likely not a Catholic version...

Probably none at the distribution point, but some people may feel uncomfortable turning it down in front of fellow townspeople for fear of being labeled "godless" (maybe just a southern thing)..it's more symbolic than anything, or the supplier would just mail it to all of the students who requested it..what's the harm in distributing it via mail if they are that concerned about their souls.....

Exactly. Get with it, Hoagie.

One of the main reasons why that Bible/God sh*t was taken out of the public schools. Dissenters, those of other faiths are stigmatized.

Here is your diploma and your bible out of the principals hand.

If the churches want to mail them or hand them out door to door that is fine, but the school shouldn't be involved.

Hand out a card with the diploma...if the kid wants the Bible, mail it in...

I guess I don't understand why baccalaureate wouldn't be a better place to make this option available...

I agree with what was asked before... if it was a Koran... would the reaction be the same? and, since the answer is CLEARLY no... how exactly does it make it okay for them to do it with a Bible?

I have to say... I even object to the card... unless the school allowed the local mosque, synagogue, jahovas witnesses... etc to do the same.

this is the essence of the establishment clause. there is not only freedom FOR religion... but also freedom FROM it.

Agree with everything on here. Nobody is stopping anyone from handing out the bibles to those that want it. I didn't have one handed to me when I graduated and I would bet a great deal of you did not have one handed to you in front of a crowd and have to turn it down either. Not for me, but I am sure for some it would have been a moment in front of a lot of peers and small town folks that you grew up with that would definately detract from your experience. It just gives some small minded people a chance to sit in judgement of you for no reason whatsoever, and also gives you an un-needed task of throwing out some garbage that someone else would have appreciated.

OK. Since you asked... ;) and you called me a nice name....

The issue ISN'T that they're handing out bibles. The ISSUE is that they let ONE person's complaint determine what an ENTIRE SCHOOL DISTRICT was going to do. It's the inmates running the asylum, and it's ground ZERO for what's wrong with our country today. What happens when ONE PERSON bitches about what's served at the school cafeteria? Do they go all nuclear and change the entire menu? What about if ONE person bitches about the content of the English curriculum? Do they change the entire English curriculum?

This issue isn't about BIBLES, it's about a VERY VOCAL, largely annoying VERY SMALL minority being allowed to run roughshod over a meek, spineless school district.

Fcukers ought to be ashamed of themselves.

If I lived in that district I'd immediately start circulating recall petitions just to prove a point.

As school board members---nay---ANY ELECTED OFFICIAL, is supposed to represent what the MAJORITY of their constituents want. Period. These people failed miserably.

Instead, dissenters (the vocal few) get to determine the fate of the vast majority. Better hope the next issue they go after isn't one YOU hold dear, Cappy.

You are completely wrong, Z

The only rights restricted were of those that didn't want a bible shoved down their throat. If a student wants a Bible, they can still get one.

Would you be ok with Cave Creek handing out Scientology materials to your kids?

And if a student DOESN'T want a bible, don't fcuking take it. It's really that simple, Jon.

I don't give a shit what the district hands out. I TALK to my kids about this stuff and they know better. It's called parenting. Something a lot of people should do a little of.
