Triple Steal done in the SEC Tournament

Post by bonarae »

Vanderbilt did one during a game against Florida:

Sure, a double steal is common, but a TRIPLE steal?!? I couldn't believe it could be done!
All the Ivy League needs to become relevant again is to diversify its OOC schedule.

Wow!

I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut that one will NEVER see Bruce Bochy go for this. It's like pulling teeth for him to go for a SINGLE steal....

I agree, dal. So is Rickey.

If I were managing today, I don't care about age, I have Rickey leading off. I'm absolutely SICK of boring baseball.

2 outs when you are down by 1 in the top of the 9th and going for the triple steal (starting obviously with the steal of home) on a RIGHTY pitcher.

That takes guts.

As stated before Jackie Robinson is somewhere trying to get back into the sport that didn't want him in his youth!!!!!!And Lawrence Berra probably was yelling "He is out" at the plate as he was six decades ago!!!!!!!!!

I'll admit that the steal of home is MUCH easier as the back end of a delayed double steal in which the catcher is dumb enough to throw all the way to second to get the guy coming from first. (Often times, teams will try to induce the guy at third into going by going through with the throw but having it cut by the shortstop for the immediate return throw to the plate.)

I've just watched the Robinson-Berra footage. It might have been camera angles (not very good at the time), but it seemed like Robinson was slow coming down the baseline. The pitch beat him by a mile, and Berra got the glove in front of the plate fairly quickly, so maybe he had a legitimate beef. But that situation was tailor made for him to step out and attack Robinson, which he failed to do. There was NO tight shot like we a get now (i.e. no zoom feature on the cameras of the day), so I can't see whether or not Berra actually made the tag. Robinson could concevably have snuck around the tag. I just can't tell.

Of course, I WANT him to be safe because other than Ruth, I HATE the Yankees....

He was OUT.

But the one thing I never noticed before, was the fact that Berra was nearly standing on home plate when he caught the pitch. He caught the ball when it was over the middle of the plate. Clearly, if the batter made any attempt at the pitch he would have picked up a catcher's interference, but unless the bases were loaded, it would not have scored a run.
What happens if he caught it in front of the plate. I think that means it would not be a pitch since it did not cross the plate, but the runner can still score or be tagged out. Or would it be a balk if the ball was caught in front of the plate, and the runners advance on the dead ball?

My head hurts thinking of this.

I agree, Flag. But we have the perfect solution here. clenz is a pretty good umpire. What say YOU, clenz?

It looked as if he may have been out but if the umpire had called Jackie out he would have caught holy hell from the Dodgers!!!!!!!!

Vandy was leading by 1 when they did that (according to the scorebox graphic), not down by 1.
