Quarterfinal Results

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Montana State avenged a regular season sweep by beating NAU, 74-64. The game was tied at 57-57 for more than 2 minutes, but MSU then closed the game on a 17-7 run over the last 4:30. All 5 Bobcat starters scored in double figures, including Nubia Garcia, who had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds as well as 6 steals. Lumberjack F Lauren Hoisington also had a double-double with 11 boards & a game-high 26 points (12-13 from the line). NAU won the boards by 11 but Montana State committed 10 fewer turnovers. Sade Cunningham had 9 assists in her final game as a 'Jack, allowing her to finish third on the all-time Big Sky list with 637 career assists.

Idaho State moved to 27-0 all-time against Sac State with a 78-76 OT win in Missoula. Jenna Brown hit a shot with 3 seconds left in regulation to tie the game and then Brown got the assist on Oana Iacovita's game-winning shot with 1 second left in overtime. Brown led ISU with 23 points and 4 assists. Also for the Bengals, Michelle Grohs had a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards while Sheila Adams went a perfect 6-6 from the field (4-4 from the arc) and scored 16 points. Charday Hunt led Sac State with 23 points (8-8 from the line) while Atty Boyer had a double-double (18 and 13) in her final game as a Hornet. Thanks to superior rebounding and ball security, Sac ended the game with 21 more shot attempts than Idaho State, but they couldn't overcome a 52%-40% shooting deficit.

The Lady Griz are 42-9 all-time in conference tournament games, 33-2 when hosting. UM’s only losses at home have come to Eastern Washington in the championship game of the 1987 Mountain West Conference tournament and to Northern Arizona in the semifinals of the 2007 Big Sky tournament.

Home Sweet Home! Good luck Lady Griz!

Come on Bobcats. Get your collective asses going. I sure hope it will be a UM/MSU championship game.

PSU wins, 71-64. MSU could have cut it to 1 with 24 seconds left, but Perry missed.

Well, that's nauseating. BigSkyTV lists the upcoming game as "Idaho State @ Montana State" and has the MSU court as the background for the UM video feed.

Semifinal Recap

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Portland State held off Montana State 71-64. The Vikings led the whole way, but Erica Perry missed a shot that would have cut the deficit to 1 with 24 seconds left. Kelli Valentine led PSU with 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Kelsey Kahle struggled with only 9 points (4-12), but she led everyone with 10 boards and had 7 offensive rebounds; the Viks won the boards by 10. Nubia Garcia only scored 5 points in her final game for MSU, but she did have 6 boards and also 6 steals for the second straight night. This game was not a three point shooting clinic, as the Bobcats went 1-9 while PSU's Claire Faucher & Katia Hadj-Hamou combined to go 1-11.

Montana beat Idaho State 70-56, but it was anything but easy. The Bengals looked nothing like the team that got clobbered by Montana in two regular season meetings and jumped out to an 11 point lead in the first half. However, the Lady Griz switched to man defense and went on a 15-2 run to take the lead. Idaho State crawled back to tie it at 39 in the second half and trailed just 52-50 with 4:55 to play. After 2 scoreless minutes, the Lady Griz went on a 10-0 run and went a perfect 13-13 from the line down the stretch. Mandy Morales had yet another insane game: scoring 25 points, snaring 6 boards, getting 3 steals, blocking 2 shots, and amassing a game-high 7 assists. Oana Iacovita had a huge night for Idaho State, though, scoring 22 points on 79% shooting and grabbing a game-high 7 rebounds. One key stat in the game was rebounding: the Lady Griz held a 35-25 edge including 13-6 on the offensive glass. The other key was free throws: Montana went 19-22 (86%) while ISU could only get to the line 2 times for the whole game.

This seems to be the case more often than not. They switch out of that zone and go on a good run and shut down the opponent.

Yeah. ISU looked horrid against the zone in the previous meeting and gameplanned for it. They couldn't prepare enough to solve both of UM's defenses, though. They couldn't match up with Morales, either.

Championship Recap

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Despite their worst shooting performance of the season (33.3%), the Lady Griz earned their second straight NCAA berth by holding off Portland State, 69-62. Portland State didn't shoot any better, though, only performing at a 32.8% clip. Sarah Ena had a double-double for Montana with 19 points and 14 rebounds (7 offensive) while tournament MVP Mandy Morales averaged 24 points, 7.5 boards, and 5 assists in two tournament games. Montana went 24-27 (89%) from the line in the second half after not even attempting a free throw in the first half; the two teams combined to shoot 91% from the line in this contest. Claire Faucher only shot 28%, but she did have a team-high 17 points, 5 rebounds, and a game-high 4 assists. True freshman F Katy Wade led PSU with 8 rebounds off the bench. The key stat of the game was rebounding: Montana outrebounded the Viks 46-34 including a dominant 26-12 edge in the second half.
