Kordell Stewart retires (officially)

Post by clenz »

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kordell Stewart’s phone stopped ringing with offers from NFL teams years ago.
Still, Stewart never officially retired. Not even after landing on his feet by getting a football analyst gig at ESPN in 2008.

....

Though Stewart spent his last two seasons with Baltimore in 2004-05, filing his retirement papers while wearing purple-and-black just didn’t feel right.
Stewart wanted to come home to Pittsburgh, where he became a sensation in the late-1990s as “Slash” Stewart, part-time quarterback, part-time running back, part-time wide receiver, full-time excitement.

......

Slash was a "trendsetter?" I guess Randall was chopped liver?

(I won't mention Moon or Williams in this conversation because they were more of the pocket passer type than the run-around guy like Randall and Stewart.)

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Point taken SH Randall was a taller version of Kordell but there were others before both of them who were scrambling QB's!!!!!!!!!

And the Hail Mary was hardly on a dime.
Stewart was hardly Vick of the 90's. He was popular because of his SLASH position.
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."

Andy and dal both make good points here. I'll take The Magic Flute's Hail Mary over Stewart's, but that's not to deny that he had armstrength; he certainly did.

Unfortunately for Kordell, the "Slash" aspect may have been a drawback in people's eyes, particularly coaches. While a guy that flexible can be an asset, many coaches tend to see them as hotshots and perhaps as a joke, though there's no way to really quantify that for a guy like Kordell, who from all reports I've heard was fairly humble. There may also have been some lingering aspects of the era where coaches in particular (wrongly, I might add) that Black quarterbacks were an oxymoron (despite the amazing things Doug Williams did in the Super Bowl). I'd love to have a guy like that on my team. Of course, I'm not necessarily tied to one quarterback as a rule, anyway. I still go back to the success the LA Rams had with two All-Star quarterbacks playing in the same game. One can just imagine the fun one could have having two guys with the knowledge of a quarterback on the field AT THE SAME TIME....

Thanks SH the term "Slash" was a detriment to Stewart in terms of becoming what everyone wanted from him being a pocket passer also he was like Jason Campbell having to adjust to a new off.coordinator that will destroy a young signalcaller as you well know.I remember something Joe Theismann said "If your a black qb attend a school that emphasizes a pass happy mentality instead of a run-oriented team.

No, Andy. I just looked. The Flutie one never touched anybody until Flutie's roomie Phelan caught it.

Stewart's was only tipped once.

I never said that Vick's only weapon was his mobility.I was asking what did Vick have that a young Kordell Stewart lacked.Stewart in his youth had everything Vick does now!!!!
