I was at Dover back in the mid-'80's when Bobby Allison won by 3 laps. 3 laps. :ohno: :ohno:

I wasn't aware of the seat-widening, and it hasn't made it to my section yet, but you are correct. Here is the story. Looks like the seating capacity will be reduced by about 30,000 seats:

http://www.doverspeedway.com/news_conte ... n-in-2012/
Dover Downs never announces the actual attendance, but the track veterans I talked to guessed 75-80,000. I guessed 70-75K. And that puts it at a bit over half full, which is what it looked like. And to think that they have the infrastructure for a second deck around turn 2!

No way there was 80K there. My dad keeps saying that, because he's sad about what's happened and is wishful that there's still more there than at an NFL game.

50-60K actual there yesterday IMHO. I'm a realist. Like DSU said, they may have sold 60K. Keep in mind that people spread out to fill in any available gaps and there were still wide swaths of empty seats as soon as you got off the front stretch.

I can remember when the place seated 22K. It was a sellout every race as they continually expanded up until about four years ago and boy did it ever tank. The front stretch where I sit may have looked full from afar, but there were empty seats interspersed throughout. Several families that had been coming since 1969 that sat up around of have given up their tickets. It's sort of sad. It was the hottest ticket around, again, just four years ago. Now if you have an extra ticket you can hardly give them away.

At least I have memories (not that long ago) of what 140K and another 20 or 30K in the infield on top of that was like. It rocked.

And the morning traffic today on Route 1 North from the North Dover on-ramp up to 95 still sucked. I can't imagine how bad it must have been when the crowds were over 100K.

I did that drive in 2000 when I lived in N Wilmington. Every way north in Delaware was a crawl: Rt 1, Rt 13, and Rt 9. I ended up going west at Cheswold and catching Rt 15. Still took me over two hours IIRC.

Sadly, it's eerily similar, just on a smaller scale. UD season ticket base has gone from close to 12K down to what? 7Kish now? Lower?

Now you actually swell with pride on the rare sellout. :ohno: C'mon homecoming! Baby needs new shoes.

Yeah. It's a shame. Nobody could have ever predicted that the effect of Old Dominion starting a football team would be felt that far north. :ohno:

From about 11K to like 7.5K now.

I agree on ODU - once we started playing teams that had no shot at beating us people started coming. I still remember the pregame hype of that game, this QB DeMarco is going to tear up the CAA blah blah blah.

ODU had next to zero offense in that game.....

Back to NASCAR, my man Jeff Gordon better start kicking it into gear soon if he wants to see the Chase this year.

His only shot at this point is to win two or more races and hope for the wild card. I did the math on the way home yesterday for one of my uncles who likes Gordon. Gordon would have to finish on average 6 positions better than the last driver in for the next 13 races. That's very nearly impossible.

It would be like ODU ever beating us with that Demarco guy with his little baby hands.

I rather doubt that UD lost a single season ticket holder to that rube school in the Hellhole of the South. :coffee:

Plenty of tickets.

To add another UD season ticket similarity, it sort of sucks to have full-price tickets when they are doing deals to put people in the turns for <$40.

At least I give Dover Downs credit for reducing ticket prices across the board, even if it was only $5. You'll never see UD do that.

Ah, that's good to know. I went to Dover in 07' and 10', and those old seats were too narrow for my 6'3", 300+ fat ass.
Next time I think about going to a Dover race I'll keep that in mind.

Junior moves up to second in points as Biffle had a bad day.

88 had a good car and probably would have finished 3rd or 4th today had Letarte not brought him in to pit. It might have been the right move had NASCAR not let the caution for Kahne scraping the wall go six laps on a two and a half mile track, allowing several drivers short on fuel to save it. Another WTF NASCAR moment.

Wasn't able to watch the race Sun. Watched recording of it last night and today.

Heck, good chance Jr would have won it if Letarte hadn't brought him in. None of the teams that didn't come in ran out of fuel.
-You had the 6 lap caution on laps 138-143, where the teams that did stop for fuel didn't anticipate the caution going for 6 laps.
-Kahne scraped the wall with 10 laps to go, not 6. That caution was from laps 150-152.
Those 2 cautions combined allowed all those that didn't stop for fuel make it.

I was just saying that the caution was for six laps. It should have taken no more than four. Each caution lap is two and a half minutes. A wall scrape is an easy cleanup, unlike a blown engine or serious collision.
