Now that the game is in Norfolk, under the control of icy-assassin Heinicke.....this game is 9 points at best. Book it.

Re: CAA to allow ODU to play for title
Was reading a stat on UD's defense. Teams at the FCS level normally regard 2-Star recruits as good. UD has two 4-Star recruits and seven 3-Star recruits suiting up just on the defensive side of the ball this year. Maryland transfers Mackall, Kerr & Rowson & UConn transfer Opoku all add to what was already going to be a pretty good defense. Add those guys in there plus a guy like Mackall that could dominate at this level & I'm not hesitating saying UD will have the CAA's best defense.93henfan wrote: Delaware's defense will be twice as good this year, perhaps the best in the CAA. The key for UD is how the OL & QB mature. We have the RB, WR & TE weapons in place, but need the interior of the line - guards & center position to be ready when the CAA mallet drops.

[quote="JayBilasBitesPillows"]UMass was already adding schollys while ODU remains at the FCS level.[/q
It will be interesting to compare UMASS and ODU in the 1A level the next few years. UMASS adding schollys and evening out their classes. ODU basically taking a 1AA team to the 1A level. Plus , ODU has yet to play a 1A team.Next year might be fun !

When using the term "cupcake" you actually have had to beat the team before, as in ever. That's a violation.N2theBLUE wrote:Bring it, Cupcake.bluehenbillk wrote:

Re: CAA to allow ODU to play for title
Learned last night that there is a possibility that ODU will not be permitted to compete for the CAA title afterall. Hopefully we will find out today, or next week, but it comes down to the CAA Presidents decision. The AD's recommended that ODU be a full CAA football member this fall. ODU still plans to compete for the FCS playoffs even if the jump to CUSA gets moved up to 7/1/12 instead of 7/1/13.
Also learned that the realignment discussions were all over the place and quite frantic at times. At one point, JMU, UD and ODU were trying to determine if all three could move up together. JMU and UD eventually said that they could not do it in within the timeframe required by any conference willing to take them. ODU then went after CUSA alone. CUSA made two discreet visits to Norfolk to view the facilities and after seeing them, ODU went from nowhere near their radar to bumping ahead of several schools (MTSU, FAU, WKU, etc.) to get the 6th invitation.

Contrary to a prior blog report, UD AD Bernard Muir recently indicated that UD did not have any conversations with CUSA about joining that conference.

Like I said though, competing for the title in CAA football is almost an afterthought anyway - the top 4-5 are getting into the playoffs so whomever gets the autobid matters little in the end other than a banner or a line in a record book.

Re: CAA to allow ODU to play for title
BU's move to the Patriot League just threw a little bit of a loop in the CAA talks.
Re: CAA to allow ODU to play for title
The CAA already knows which schools they want and BU may not have been on the short list. Clearly, they wanted out of the AEC.
Forget CAA talks. The conference that so willingly identified with New England now has zero presence in the area's largest media market. If Stony leaves as expected, the AEC will also have nothing in the NYC market either. Big trouble in River City.

Agreed - BU announcing this just days after the CAA meetings concluded leads one to believe that BU was not getting a CAA invite and, further, that maybe a big AEC member, like Stony Brook, could be getting that invite and leaving.henfan wrote:The CAA already knows which schools they want and BU may not have been on the short list. I dont think that this means that ODU can be playoff eligible, I believe that the NCAA rules say that they are ineligible for FCS playoffs once they announce their intentions to move up. I cant find it now but I seem to remember reading that in an NCAA rule book somewhere

CAA says "No Way" to ODU
June 19, 2012
RICHMOND, Va. (June 19, 2012) The Colonial Athletic Association Council of Presidents has voted that Georgia State University and Old Dominion University are ineligible in 2012©\13 for CAA team championships in which the conference receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Georgia State and Old Dominion made a formal request they remain eligible to compete for all conference championships during the 2012\13 season and that their set effective date of withdrawal be set as June 30, 2013. After thorough discussion, the presidents unanimously decided to set July 1, 2012 as the date at which both institutions would become ineligible.
°The conferences Bylaws were well understood and evaluated when the institutions made their decision to withdraw from the conference, CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager said. °While we respect an institution's decision to withdraw, it is not without consequences that the institution must accept. As a conference, we desire to have those institutions that are fully invested in the continued prosperity of the conference represent the conference as its champion.
This same ruling applied to American University, East Carolina University and the University of Richmond following their withdrawal from the CAA during the 2000©\01 academic year. Georgia State and Old Dominion will be unable to compete in conference championships in baseball, basketball, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.
Individual student\athletes from Georgia State and Old Dominion will be able to compete in CAA championships in cross country, swimming and diving, track and field and wrestling, but team points will not be calculated.
While not participating in CAA championships, the institutions will still be eligible for selection to NCAA Championships as an at©\large selection. The institutions are also eligible for inclusion in the conference television package and its student©\athletes and coaches are eligible for all conference awards.
Decisions on extending associate membership opportunities will be evaluated when conference realignment is complete.
CAA Football Presidents Determine Championship Eligibility
RICHMOND, Va. (June 19, 2012) -- The Colonial Athletic Association Football (CAA Football) Council of Presidents has determined that as a withdrawing institution, Old Dominion University will not be eligible for the 2012 CAA Football conference championship and the league¡¯s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Georgia State previously announced its intentions to reclassify to the Football Bowl Subdivision April 9, 2012, which by NCAA rule renders it ineligible for the CAA Football Championship, the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship as well as at-large consideration for the NCAA Playoffs.
°CAA Football bylaws require consideration and discussion of any action restricting the rights and privileges of membership afforded a withdrawing institution, CAA Football Commissioner Tom Yeager said. °The CAA Football Presidents strongly believe the interests of the conference are best served when a continuing member institution is designated as the conference champion.
While not participating for the CAA Football Championship, Old Dominion will still be eligible for selection to the NCAA Championship as an at-large selection. [Georgia State is ineligible for the NCAA Playoffs due to NCAA rules regarding its reclassification]. Both institutions will remain eligible for inclusion in the conference television package and its student-athletes and coaches are eligible for all conference awards.

Re: CAA to allow ODU to play for title
Scratch this thread; ODU will be ineligible to compete for the football title. The directors' recommendations didn't translate with the presidents. We can still get an at-large and compete in the postseason though.

For football whether or not they can get an autobid really doesn't matter that much, the CAA has always been good enough to place multiple teams in. It's the Olympic sports where ODU will feel the pinch.

Re: CAA to allow ODU to play for title
I can't bame the Presidents for voting this way.
However, it is different from UR's departure that they referenced in the PR. The CAA does not offer FBS football, and there was no way for football to go FBS alone. ODU didn't have much of a choice if it wanted to go FBS. UR on the other hand had no such excuse when it left the CAA high and dry.
ECU had a similar situation to us. American downgraded .
