Was the Lottery Rigged?

Post by SuperHornet »

Man, a Jim Rome interview hasn't been this contentious since Jim Everett flipped the coffee table.

He asked David Stern if the NBA Draft Lottery was rigged, seeing as league-owned NO won. Naturally, Stern bristled at that as he felt he was in a catch-22; if Michael Jordan had won, he'd be accused of hooking up his buddy, and if Brooklyn had won, he'd be accused of trying to "get them off the mat."

Stern's response? To ask Rome if he'd stopped beating his wife.

If ever there was an OMG moment in the world of off-season sports, this is it.

Hell yeah it was rigged just like it was when Cleveland got Kyrie Irving after LeBron left.

I don't think the lottery was rigged.

Stern has let power go to his head. If he is going to step in and block trades (like Chris Paul to the Lakers) then he needs to answer questions. I didn't see the Rome interview, but I heard it, and it sounded like Stern was being overly sensitive and a jerk.

Then that tells me that something was wrong by his response to the questions from Rome!!!!

Why fix the lottery? Why risk the credibility of an entire league - a league that makes lots of money. There is no upside to fixing the lottery, there is a huge risk if you put the fix in and get caught. The lottery wasn't fixed.

The problem lies with Stern, he's so used to being god of the NBA that he thinks his divine status applies everywhere.

I think 86 has hit the nail on the head. Stern has screwed the league over with his massive ego, but even HE wouldn't go so far as to risk internal fixing. If word got out that he HAD, he'd lose so much cred that the league just might fold.

I agree with you for agreeing with me. :thumb: ;)

I love a conspiracy theory as much as the next guy, but when you evaluate the theory I think you need to ask what is to be gained. Why does the NBA want the top pick going to New Orleans? Wouldn't the NBA be better served if the top pick went to Brooklyn?

No matter who got the #1 pick, there would have been conspiracy theories everywhere. New Orleans gets it, Stern is looking out for the NBA's own team. Charlotte gets it, Stern is only looking out for his buddy, Michael Jordan. Cleveland gets it, Stern is trying to redo last year's feel good story with the little kid with leukemia. Sacramento gets it, Stern is rewarding the Maloofs and Kevin Johnson for keeping the Kings there. Brooklyn gets it, Stern is trying to pad another big market team. Portland gets it, Stern is trying to make up for the injuries to Oden and Roy. Toronto gets it, Stern is trying to keep the Canada market. Detroit gets it, Stern is trying to resurrect a once strong franchise.

You could make a case for whoever would have been lucky enough to get the #1 pick, which is why it wasn't rigged. All it is, is all of us losers trying to make some noise while the two best teams (this season) are still playing.

Why do criminals commit wrongful acts to see if they can get away with it and Stern is no different he just wears expensive clothes but a criminal by any other name is still the same.Listen to a song called "The White Man's Got A God Complex" from The Last Poets.

Most criminals commit wrongful acts because they expect to gain something by their actions. What does the NBA gain by rigging the lottery?

Answer: The NBA gains nothing.
The NBA loses a lot if it fixes the lottery and word of the fix got out - which it eventually would.
