Mets Fans: Can You Explain R.A. Dickey this year?

Post by AZGrizFan »

A career sub-.500, over 4.00 ERA pitcher who's gone 11-1 (losing his first start and winning 11 straight) with a 2.00 ERA (including an era of 0.00 over his last 5 starts) and a WHIP under 1.00.

Oh BTW, he's struck out 8, 11, 10, 9, 8, 12 and 13 in his last 7 starts and his last two starts have been complete-game 1-hitters. Three of his last four starts have been complete games.

What gives with this guy?

Yeah, but this dude has added 20 mph and 45 degrees of "flutter" to his knuckler overnight.

He learned how to throw the knuckball because Buck Showalter told him in Texas he wasn't going to last pitching the way he was. They say his knuckleball hits up to the low 80s. :?

Well based on his numbers in Texas and now, it appears Buck was right.

Too be fair, he has actually pitched pretty well all 3 years with the Mets.

2010 - 27 games, 2.84 ERA
2011 - 33 games, 3.28 ERA
2012 - 14 games 2.00 ERA

He has improved this year especially the last 5 games but realize that at the end of May this year, his ERA was 3.06 and on May 22 it was 3.45 so in reality it's really been the last 5-6 games. Hoping he keeps it up. Been the most dominanting pitcher in the major leagues over the past month.

I think the Twins fans are wishing they still had Dickey and Santana.

Yeah right not after that aforementioned three run blast courtesy of Swisher.

Explains a lot. When they're on, knuckleballers are almost impossible to hit, when they are not on they're just a notch above batting practice. Dickey has been "on" quite a bit this year.

That's not right. Look at his monthly ERA last year:
April - 3.82
May - 4.93
June - 2.57
July - 3.79
August - 2.70
September - 1.82

For his last 2 months which were 10 games, his ERA was really low. He was only 3-4 in those games (and the team 5-5) but the Mets only scored 25 runs in those 10 games with 17 of those runs being in 3 games so they didn't really back him up too much
