'Q' SELECTED WITH NINTH OVERALL PICK IN WNBA DRAFT BY THE MINNESOTA LYNX
Hollingsworth joins former teammate Krystal Vaughn as WNBA draftees

RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va.) will always go down as one of the legends in Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball history.

The legend grew just a little more on Thursday afternoon when Hollingsworth became the first ever Ram selected in the first round of the WNBA Draft. The frontcourt standout was chosen ninth overall by the Minnesota Lynx. It is the highest-ever selection in any professional draft by any VCU athlete.

”It’s really an honor and I’m excited about the opportunity that I have at the next level,” Hollingsworth said. “This is not just about me though. It’s about all my teammates and coaches that have molded me into the basketball player I am today.”

It marks the second straight season that a Ram has been taken in the WNBA Draft with former VCU standout Krystal Vaughn being selected in the third round of last year's draft. She is currently a member of the Washington Mystics.

Hollingsworth led the Black & Gold to it’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance this season after posting a 26-6 mark in the regular season, which tied a school-record for wins. ‘Q’ and the Rams dropped a heartbreaker to Big East power, Rutgers, in the first round, 57-51.

She finished her career with a school record 55 double-doubles, a mark that also ranks in the top-25 in NCAA history. Her 18 double-doubles during the 2008-2009 season tie a school record set by Niamh Darcy in 1994-95.

”I’m really excited for Q and proud of what she’s been able to do here at VCU. It’s really a testament of how she’s developed not only as a student-athlete, but also a person,” Head Coach Beth Cunningham said. “I’m thrilled about how high she was selected and it says a lot about how hard she worked to put herself into this position. She was really the cornerstone of this program for the past four years and this is a well-deserved accolade.”

She goes down as the only women’s basketball player in VCU history to accumulate over 1,000 points (1,588) and 1,000 rebounds (1,103). Her offensive output was at a high in 2008-09, finishing with 14.8 points per game, while grabbing 9.4 rebounds per contest.

On senior night against Northeastern, Hollingsworth saw her jersey hang from the rafters, becoming only the third women’s basketball player in school history to have that distinquished honor.

RICHMOND, Va. – New Head Coach Shaka Smart announced his first coaching hire of his tenure at Virginia Commonwealth University. Will Wade will join the Black & Gold after serving as an assistant coach at Harvard for the past two seasons.

Wade was the first coaching hire for head coach Tommy Amaker prior to the 2007-08 season at Harvard. He served as the recruiting coordinator for Amaker and the Crimson during his two years in Boston.

“I am very excited to be a part of Coach Smart’s staff at VCU,” Wade said. “VCU has a tremendous basketball tradition and I look forward to continuing that success while reaching for even greater heights.”

His recruiting skills have been recognized on the national stage with his first class at Harvard being recognized as one of the top-25 classes in the country by ESPN.com. That class included impressive additions in top-30 post-grad, 6-9 Andrew Van Nest and potential ESPN 150 player, 6-5 G/F Max Kenyi Wade received his undergraduate degree in secondary education with an emphasis in history and geography from Clemson University in May of 2005. During his four years at Clemson, he served as a student assistant and head manager for the men’s basketball team. Wade’s responsibilities included assisting with team and individual player workouts and practice, as well as aiding in team and opponent scouting. He also filmed and edited conference games. While assisting with official and unofficial recruiting visits, Wade helped maintain the recruiting database and create innovative recruiting mailouts. In a managerial role, he coordinated game day set-up of Clemson’s Littlejohn Coliseum and the locker rooms and distributed equipment to players. - VCU RAM NATION

RICHMOND, Va. – Three familiar faces around the state are the latest additions to the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball staff with the announcement of assistants Mike Rhoades and Bill Courtney, along with Director of Basketball Operations Kyle Getter, head coach Shaka Smart announced Wednesday.

“I’m extremely ecstatic about the staff we’ve assembled. It possesses the ideal blend of energy, experience and expertise,” Smart said. “We are excited about rolling up our sleeves and going to work for VCU Basketball.”

Combined, Rhoades and Courtney bring nearly 30 years of sideline experience to the program. Almost all of those years have been spent in the Commonwealth, from the Richmond area, to northern Virginia, to Washington, D.C.

”During the whole process, it was a priority that we assembled a staff that held strong ties within the state,” Smart said.

A capacity crowd packed the Kaplan Arena Saturday to watch William & Mary take on Old Dominion.

WILLIAMSBURG - On its largest stage in 17 years, William and Mary came within one extra rotation of a big chance for one of its biggest wins. A crowd of 7,216, the most to see a CAA game at Kaplan Arena, watched David Schneider's off-balance 3-point try at the buzzer circle the basket, then fall off the right side of the rim as Old Dominion held on for a 58-55 victory Saturday.

The win was the seventh in a row for ODU (16-5, 8-1 CAA), the league's stingiest defense, which held the Tribe, shooting 45.5 from the floor, to an 18-of-54 performance (33.3 percent). The loss, in front of its largest home crowd since 1993, was the second straight for William and Mary (14-5, 6-3 CAA), which had tied the best record in the 105-year history of the program with a 14-3 start.

HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 25, 2010 - Senior guard Pierre Curtis (Denver, Colo./East) and freshman guard Darren White (Danville, Va./Dan River) hit four free throws in the final 16 seconds to push James Madison past Radford 67-63 in a non-conference men's basketball game Monday evening at the Convocation Center.

JMU snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 9-11 for the season. RU dropped to 10-9. The contest was originally slated for Dec. 19 but was postponed due to a severe winter storm.

The Dukes trailed 55-54 with 3:12 to go before reeling off a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the night at 63-55 with 49 seconds remaining. However, the lead vanished in 32 seconds thanks to an 8-0 spurt by the Highlanders.
