At this point even Joe's family admitted that he made a mistake.

I am in favor of removing the statue. It has created a tremendous amount of vitrol and may cause unsafe situations now and in the future.

Still waiting for Franks Tanks and Citadel Grad to admit it. 8-)

Had to be done. It would have been a target for vandals. Even if Penn St. wanted to throw their whole hearted support behind Paterno (no pun intended) the statue was going down (okay, pun intended).

Jon,

You should be happy now. Sandusky is in jail. The University admin at the time of the coverup will be cranked through the wheels of justice soon, and rightfully so. Paterno has been relegated to the scrap heap of history.

Can you stop the continual bashing of Penn State? Have you gotten enough off your chest yet?

Disclosure: yes, I am a Penn State fan. But Christ man, they've now been completely dismantled by the NCAA, outside of its jurisdiction, simply to be made an example of. Players who gave their blood, sweat, and tears to the program from 1998-2012 are now nonpersons (to steal from Orwell's 1984). Penn State has suffered the worst penalty in the history of the NCAA.

What more needs to be done to make you STFU, or is your mission in life going forward to simply be the "Ha Ha" kid from the Simpsons?

Yeah, yeah. He's the "Ha Ha" kid to the rest of us. I also butchered 1984. It's "unperson", not "nonperson". Sue me.

Um, a bit sensitive there - the sanctions were JUST handed down - and the Big 10 has yet to hand down there

Do I feel bad for the players - to a degree.

And you are wrong, the NCAA has complete jurisdiction in the matters relating to athletic programs. The cover up was all about protecting the football program and Joe's legacy and getting him the win record.

And by lashing out at me, it is clear you are still in denial. Your anger should 100% be at Paterno, Spanier et al. With out the coverup, this would have been settled LONG before CS even came into existence

And you are wrong, the NCAA has complete jurisdiction in the matters relating to athletic programs. The cover up was all about protecting the football program and Joe's legacy and getting him the win record.
Quoting ESPN from earlier today:
A former Committee on Infractions chairman and current Division I Appeals Committee member told ESPN.com's Katz on Sunday the NCAA's penalizing of an institution and program for immoral and criminal behavior also breaks new ground.

The former chair, who has been involved with the NCAA for nearly three decades, said he couldn't use his name on the record since the case could come before him and the committee he still serves on in an appeals process.

"This is unique and this kind of power has never been tested or tried," the former chair said. "It's unprecedented to have this extensive power. This has nothing to do with the purpose of the infractions process. Nevertheless, somehow (the NCAA president and executive board) have taken it on themselves to be a commissioner and to penalize a school for improper conduct."

The chair said that the NCAA was dealing with a case that is outside the traditional rules or violations. He said this case does not fall within the basic fundamental purpose of NCAA regulations.

"The purpose of the NCAA is to keep a level playing field among schools and to make sure they use proper methods through scholarships and etcetera," the chair said. "This is not a case that would normally go through the process. It has nothing to do with a level playing field. It has nothing to do with whether Penn State gets advantages over other schools in recruiting or in the number of coaches or things that we normally deal with."

The NCAA, the chair said, had never gotten involved in punishing schools for criminal behavior.

"The criminal courts are perfectly capable of handling these situations," the former chair said. "This is a new phase and a new thing. They are getting into bad behavior that are somehow connected to those who work in the athletic department.

"This is an important precedent. And it should be taken with extreme care."
It sounds like the NCAA's jurisdiction over this is murky at best, and a complete reach at worst. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

OK, feel free to go back to your incessant Penn State hate mongering. You seem to really enjoy it.
