I thought it was interesting. I don't know who wrote it either.

No, you still don't get the point. You're in defense mode...but that's normal. We're getting out of China because China is starting to build a middle class...so everyone is moving to cheaper labor markets...or trying to build a niche market to well-off feel goody people who are "environmentally conscious"...at least in a few select sections of their bubble world.

Demographics of your customers, and volume...compared to Walmart. Then talk about "trends".

The only trend is that manufacturers are still trying to find the lowest supply prices and labor prices that fit their niche. The "trend" to anything else is a small blip on the stat sheet that makes a few people feel good. Of course, YT is poor, therfore he will have to avoid buying expensive dresses and live with, and probably hate, himself because each day he gets dressed in his low cost clothes he is contributing to keeping people as wage slaves.

Oh, go tell you wife to imediately start paying 20% more for her supplies...just to make sure her line of suppliers are able to pay their suppliers a better wage next year...and increase her labor costs by 10% each year...after all, her employees, who are making her successful, should deserve to have something to look forward to instead of 2-3% raises that barely keep up with inflation.

Oh, and keep the price of the garment the same. Might as well let the customers keep some of their hard earned money to feed their families (unless you just sell to women that don't believe in having families...start the boycott  ). Damn capitalist pig! :D

I wonder why I'd be defensive since you attack everything or come off as you know more about a persons business than they do.

1) Of course China is building a middle class, the unionization and higher wages are factors that are driving manufacturing out. Labor costs have jumped 30% in China. They are no more the cheap manufacturing hub as they once were. Vietnam, for instance, is expecting significant growth. A Japanese corporation is put billions into Vietnam to provide manufacturing. But i've already stated that.

2) The demographics aren't Wal-Mart customer. It's more like Anthropologie, Edun, ModCloth, etc... In fact, she recently completed a survey where her average customer is a Married woman, with a Bachelors, making $60-$80k who owns her home, enjoys antique shopping, considers herself "eco-friendly" and "trendy" and resides in the NorthWest, Northeast and SouthEast. Age range is 25-43. Secondary market are the 18-25 college kids. I can supply you with percentages if you care. I doubt it. :coffee:

3) YT may be poor, but if he's shopping at my wifes store, he has some issues that I think would worry his parents.

4) 20% more for supplies? And where is your in depth analysis to support this or is this just some arbitrary number? We have contracts that define costs including fee's and such. However, we'll review the market and economy when we renew in 2014.

See, we've built up an amazing relationship with those that source and manufacture. She does/has done effective forecasting and keeping low overhead has afforded her to at least stay ahead of the game and save for the future. We never know what the future holds, or how much inflation will affect the bottom line, however we can forecast and try to minimize the impact by improving sales and shifting our focus to areas that our customers have voiced their opinions on. (of course, our repeat customers have given us 1 or 2 ideas which have been excellent)

5) Her employees? :geek: :? I don't need a 2.3% raise. In fact, I don't take a salary(technically she gets a salary). She's the only real employee and being that we have sources of income outside of the business, she only pulls a little bit. Everything else gets reinvested into the company.

40% markup is dangerously low to even being able to turn a profit. Considering the big stores mark up their goods 100% at the least. But, like good business owners, we studied the market, our competitors and our prices reflect that. Of course, they could change, nothing is set in stone. But keeping the prices low while still turning a small profit is important. We have a specific goal in mind and so far, so good.
Sounds like a good small business you & your wife have. But if you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. ;)

It's not too bad. We've had many arguments in the past. She's the creative, fashion side and I'm the business side. We don't always see eye-to-eye but it isn't personal, it's business. And she's the owner. I'm the silent partner that makes sure the accountant gets what he needs and the invoices are documented, etc... Our hopes is to build it up over the years so that all the salary we pull from it goes to our retirement fund. So far so good. There are people that helped, but the travelling to find the right suppliers, manufacturers, fabrics, etc... was all her. I guess the bank helped with that small business loan. And I guess we can thank her ancestors for being Indians, that was heritage was helpful. :thumb:

Battleships went bye-bye. Aircraft carriers will go bye-bye within a decade or two. Manned subs may be the last great deterrent...but they will be hunted down easily in the next two decades.

The problem with subs is they have to come back to their bases to replace their men and supplies. At that time, with enough patience, they can be targeted. Within 15 years, probably earlier, the manned submarine will be toast. They will have an armed, unmanned tail on them whenever they leave port. The minute the manned sub fires a missile, it will be time for their sailors to pray.

If we get to that point, the world will already be fucked. Considering that technology would come from either NATO(most likely US) or China.

Whoever made that picture pretty much missed the point. The show of support for CFA wasn't a protest against gay friendly companies. It was a show of support for a company that was under attack because of the commonly held religious view of the CEO.

Not the attack by everyday citizens in the form of a boycott, I think that's perfectly appropriate. What alarmed many people, however, was the attack by various high profile government officials.

THAT is the crux of the issue. There are consequences for speech, of course, but when a representative of the government (whether it be local, state or federal) makes threats based on someone's exercise of free speech we should ALL be alarmed and make it clear that it is not appropriate. If we accept that kind of behavior then we weaken the the strength behind the First Amendment. It might seem fine now, but a less toothy Constitution means that it is more likely that one day someone might try to limit speech that is important to you.

Boycott, fine. I have no problems with it, but we should all be concerned that there is more outrage over what the CFA CEO said than what various officials in Chicago and Boston suggested.

Other examples of how a public official has publicly threatened to pull a biz license or deny one based solely on the speech of an owner of a private business?

Not what I was getting at. I was trying to say if an attack by an unmanned drone sunk a manned sub, then it's probably WW3. Or something along the lines of Russia/China vs. NATO.

You should refer to the proper portion of my post, then. Mayors and aldermen were threatening to bar Chik Fil A from their cities because of something the CEO said.

It has and does happen, but usually between private entities. Next time read more carefully before engaging in hyperbole and you won't have to whine about people moving goalposts.

Riot Act would refer to someone who in the course of their speech is causing a public safety hazard.

Chick-fil-A flap reveals true gay agenda
Washington Times ^ | 8/3/2012 | Jeffrey T. Kuhner

The homosexual lobby wants to outlaw Christianity. This is the real meaning behind the uproar over Chick-fil-A. The chicken sandwich franchise has become a lightning rod for the culture war. Liberals despise it; conservatives back it. Supporters of gay marriage want to prevent the Atlanta-based chain from expanding, demanding new restaurant permits be denied.
