Dad played for Iowa in the 1950's so I was a bit of a Hawkeye growing up and since we lived on the WC the Big 10 and Pac 10 were the only conferences that mattered and everyone else was over-rated.

There are more EWU alumni in Spokane County than any other school, and by quite a bit. Don't get me started...Grizalltheway wrote:I'm surrounded by Cougar shit at work. Re: Do you have a FBS team you root for? If so, why?
I used to like Oklahoma, but mainly for their entertaining style of play in the early wishbone years, with Chuck Fairbanks coaching there.
BCS football disgusts me these days, too many scandals, too much influence, and too much worshiping of the almighty dollar. I especially despise teams like Alabama, Miami, Ohio State, Texas, Mud-Chicken, etc.
When it comes to college football, the smaller the division the more entertaining it becomes, especially in those smaller than the high school stadium venues out there.

Wish I could agree with that sentiment, but if I didn't go to UD I probably wouldn't be a fan of I-AA with the exception of the playoff system.Wedgebuster wrote:When it comes to college football, the smaller the division the more entertaining it becomes, especially in those smaller than the high school stadium venues out there.

Nope. Occasionally I'll watch an FBS game, but I don't really root for either team.

I grew up watching and cheering for the Griz (earliest game I can recall was the '95 championship), so I'd like to think I'd still be following it avidly even if I had gone to school elsewhere.89Hen wrote:Wish I could agree with that sentiment, but if I didn't go to UD I probably wouldn't be a fan of I-AA with the exception of the playoff system.Wedgebuster wrote:When it comes to college football, the smaller the division the more entertaining it becomes, especially in those smaller than the high school stadium venues out there.

I did too. My sister was a freshman at UD when I was 2. Been going to games for a long time. I guess I meant if I didn't go to UD or have ties there. IOW, if my family stayed in PA and we all went to PSU, I probably wouldn't watch a moment of I-AA football.Grizalltheway wrote:I grew up watching and cheering for the Griz (earliest game I can recall was the '95 championship), so I'd like to think I'd still be following it avidly even if I had gone to school elsewhere.89Hen wrote: Wish I could agree with that sentiment, but if I didn't go to UD I probably wouldn't be a fan of I-AA with the exception of the playoff system.

#1 - I super duper agree with you. BCS football has been too scandalous and been too much over money for me to digest, even surpassing its entertainment/sporting value.Wedgebuster wrote:BCS football disgusts me these days, too many scandals, too much influence, and too much worshiping of the almighty dollar. #2 - The lower the division the team plays in, the regular students become more devoted to the varsity teams at their school and are also sometimes involved with the student-athletes, even being friends with them.
Remember that NESCAC football has survived despite not playing for Salem (the site of the D-III championship) every year and only playing against each other (8 teams in all) due to their administration's strong support for them.
All the Ivy League needs to become relevant again is to diversify its OOC schedule.

Re: Do you have a FBS team you root for? If so, why?

Grew up in a family in Alabama split between Tennessee and Alabama fans. Got to see some amazing football games growing up because of this... the first SEC Championship game, Alabama curbstomping Miami in New Orleans, Tennessee winning their championship in 1998.
I gradually started to gravitate to Tennessee... mainly because they were my dad's team and he was more into it than I was. It was also because it was the mid-1990's and Tennessee had this QB named Peyton Manning. I'm pretty sure I can pinpoint the exact moment I solidified myself as a Tennessee fan... Peyton Manning to Joey Kent for 80-yards on the first play from scrimmage... Third Saturday in October... 1995:

I still liked Alabama and pulled for them in most games until 2001 when Alabama was put on probation over Albert Means recruitment... and Alabama fans lashed out and blamed Philip Fulmer. The hate and vitriol spewed at him floored me... and, since then Alabama has been one of the teams I hate most in college football... because they have the WORST fans I've ever encountered... only since confirmed through incidents like Harvey Updike and the Krystal's teabagger guy.
Probably not entirely a coincidence that my level of hate increased as Alabama returned to prominence and Tennessee faded into obscurity... but, Fuck Bama.

Ohio State all the way for me. My parents are from small-town western North Dakota, but when I was a kid, we moved to Ohio so my mom could continue her graduate school there. Naturally, the Ohio State love permeates the state and I got the bug. My dad never did, though. He still sounds like some of the saps on here who hate the big-time college football. To each their own, I guess.
First Ohio State game I really remember is the 1997 Rose Bowl, otherwise known as Jake Plummer's last college game. I remember it more for David Boston, though. I remember bits and pieces of the mid-90's, mostly the Eddie George years, but the first Ohio State game I remember actively watching and really caring was that Rose Bowl game.

I don't hate 'big time' college football, I dislike the manner in which its champion is determined.rkwittem wrote:

I love college football in all its various shapes and forms. I do have disdain for pompous twits such as Gordon Gee who think that big-time college football is superior to other levels of college football. That's kind of like me sitting here in metropolitan Chicago and thinking that I'm better than backward azzed yokels from western North Dakota. Just because some myopic individuals think that way doesn't make it true and I don't share their perspective.rkwittem wrote:Ohio State all the way for me. I grew up a Buckeye fan as well but in the days of Archie Griffin and Ohio isn't exactly the best place to develop a rational understanding of college football. Hopefully age and experience will give you a broader perspective and understanding of the longer-term history of college football.

UConn

Grew up in Conn, both of my parents went there and I attended lots of UConn BBall games in the 60's. Attended almost every UConn-Yale game in the 70's (all Yale wins as I recall).
Penn St.

Temple

Glad they are back in the Big East.
