South Carolina State considers dropping to DII

Post by dbackjon »

Officials at South Carolina State University informed its Board of Trustees yesterday that a $6 million deficit may force significant cost cutting measures university-wide. Newly-hired vice-president of finance Eric Eaton proposed a plan that would implement a hiring freeze, cuts to existing faculty positions, and a potential move to Division II.

I'm curious...

Winston-Salem State abandoned their transition to D1, and returned to D2. When did the last full-fledged D1 program move to D2?

They didn't have football, but Birmingham Southern and UNO have gone down to D-3. In the last few years.

UNO never made it to D3. They just decided to stay DI, and are joining the Southland.

Centenary dropped to D3 recently

There you go. Looks like they moved down in 1985 from the MVC. Good recall on that one Frank. :thumb:

I remember that from when this topic came up before. Typically I wouldn't memorize such things.

Wow, back in February it was "only" a $4 million shortfall. I guess this is the same song, second verse, a little bit louder and little bit worse.

That would be the most logical, low-cost destination, wouldn't it?

Yeah...any school not beating Ga State by 30+ needs to think hard about that...

Winston-Salem was pathetic in FCS. In D2, they were 11-1 last year and ranked 15th in the pre-season poll this year. It makes sense for a team to drop down if they aren't cutting it financially and performance-wise.

Its no secret that schools in the hbcu family all suffer from financial deficiencies.

Of course the idea doesn't appeal to me but if they can't come up with the money what choice does the school have.

30 less schollarships, likely lower base coach pay all the way around once the current contacts are up, lower recruiting budget, tighter recruiting range, less plane travel, etc...
