I like all the unique ones...Mocs, Phoenix, Flames, Lumberjacks, etc.
Garden variety ones, especially those named after animals like Cats, Dogs, Bears, Eagles...just don't do it for me. Dime-a-dozen.

lots of good ones to choose from! Really prefer ones that highlight some unique aspect of the state or city, or are creative in some way. agree that wildcats, bulldogs, and aggies- despite being the mascots of some of my favorite teams!- are poor excuses for nicknames. Extra points for keeping a silly nickname used back in the day rather than changing in the 70's for various reasons.

Also way into just using a colour as your nickname. Shame the schools who do are all prissy football dropping schools in large part, i.e. Chicago Maroons, NYU Violets, etc.

Some of my favorites in no particular order:
Aztecs
Toreros
Matadors
Gauchos
Dons
(bit of a theme there, really- all really reflect the region they are in pretty well)

Buckeyes, cornhuskers, fighting irish, etc all fit this mode for me.

Best conference in sports in terms of nicknames? the New England Small College Athletic Conference. This is a conference with the Lord Jeffs, the Ephs, the Continentals, the Bantams, and the Jumbos.
