The crux of what Romney said is absolutely true. We have reached a point in history where a large percentage of the citizens of the United States think they are entitled to have what they need. They think that if they need something and can't get it on their own that automatically means government is responsible for providing it to them. They think they have a "rights" to food, housing, health care, etc. Frankly, I think Romney underestimated the percentage when he put it at 47%.

And that entitlement mentality works to the advantage of the Democratic Party.

Where he is technically wrong is in saying that 100% of the 47% he was saying pay no income taxes would vote for Obama. It's probably more long the lines of 60% of that 47%. But he's basically right in saying that there is no incentive for people who don't pay income taxes to favor lower income taxes and in saying that there is a large percentage of Americans who have the entitlement mentality.

Okay, John, so where are the jobs? The vast majority of people would work their asses off if there were decent jobs. The wealthy have enjoyed decades of tax breaks now and corporations get more welfare than anyone.

So where are the jobs?

Aint it the deal that we'll give you capitalists and entrepreneurs our labor at a reasonable rate and a larger chunk of our shared cultural, scientific and natural resources, and in return you'll create industries and jobs that give us a decent standard of living?

Where's the hope and change? Where's the "I'll fix the economy in three years or I don't deserve another term"? I think our president put away his red cape with the big "S" on it in January '09, and we could really use it.

A sense of entitlement in the land of opportunity has no bounds. There are countless examples, but let's start with members of congress, tax attorneys, trust fund children...

I think that there's something to what you say about the sense of entitlement knowing no bounds. But I don't think getting rich "off the government" necessarily indicates a sense of entitlement. If someone produces something and gets a contract with government to seel the product and gets rich off of that I don't think that's an indication of a sense of entitlement (for example).

But, as I said in some thread (maybe this one, maybe another), I think Romney underestimated the percent of the people who think that they are entitled to have government provide for their basic needs if necessary.

No. That isn't the deal. We encourage people to render natural resources into something that will be of use to us. Take our oil resources. What use would they be to us if nobody located them, extracted them, and rendered them into useful products? It's not like we don't get anything out of oil companies doing what they do. Without somebody doing what oil companies do we'd be miserable.

They don't "owe" us jobs. An effect of their activity is the creation of jobs. But that's not the purpose of their existence. BTW, there would be a lot more oil exploration and recovery jobs if liberals would get the hell out of the way. That's where at least SOME of the jobs are.

Meanwhile liberals are laying the foundation for eliminating millions of jobs in the coal industry.

You want jobs? Get the liberals the hell out of the way.
