NFL Regular Refs Incompetence

Post by bluehenbillk »

First weekend back & they come within a razor of screwing up the outcome of 2 games.

The state of Wisconsin would've gone ape-shit if the Saints win that game after they blow the fumble call on the Saints Darren Sproles on a KO return. Packers were out of challenges & couldn't overturn a blatant miss (which happens way too often with these fools) by the zebras.

The Eagles luck out too on a phantom pass interference call against NNamdi on 3rd down at the Eagles 27 with NYG driving on the last series of the game. Fortunately for Philly, Tom Coughlin didn't go conservative and called a long pass play that was Offensive PI (I'm sure NYG fans may call it a make-up call) that put them ulitimately too far for a GW FG.

Funny how there won't be 1/10 the coverage of the inadequacy of these guys today as there was for the replacement refs.....

The offensive PI call against the Giants was absolutely a make-up call IMO. Also agree with everything above. The real refs also suck. The NFL needs full time refs who make this their only job, just like the rest of pro sprots.

Cardinals fans were wanting the replacement refs back as well - several GB/Seattle type calls (except not on the last play of the game) in the AZ/MIA game as well

We knew this going in. But we didn't expect the high-profile stuff to happen so quickly. I'd like to be optomisitc and chalk this up to rust. (Remember that they didn't even have the benefit of doing pre-season games, where much of this would happen without the major publicity.) The horrible scab calls increased the expectations laid on the "real" officials, and behaving normally for what SHOULD have been a first pre-season game (for them) they got burned. I'm sure they'll be back to "normal" within a month or so.

Will that eliminate the high-profile bad calls? Not at all. But it certainly won't be every week or in every game.

Rust? How do you explain the best crew the NFL had, after a full regular season and playoffs, botching a Super Bowl a few years back.

Face it, there are major gaffes every single week, regular or replacement refs. It just made for good copy to really lay into the replacement guys. I mean, no one likes a scab anyway.

I wasn't talking about the Super Bowl, numbnutz. I was talking about this week.

No, major gaffes don't happen every single week, GF. If they did, they wouldn't be news. My whole point is that we (or, rather, the NFL) set them up to fail with the lockout because they didn't have any games that don't count to get MOST of the problem calls out of their systems.

You ARE correct, though, that most people don't like scabs....

There are bad calls every single week. There's no disputing that and there never has been. People got caught up in the whole replacement ref thing and it blew up much bigger than it was. The type of calls that got missed this weekend (the fumble in the GB/NO game and the bad pass interference calls in the Phi/NYG game) do happen all the time. Because they happen all the time is why they aren't news - people just can't keep getting worked up over every bad call because they are too many of them. We're numb to bad calls anymore.

There's a difference between a blown offside call and a game-deciding PI call in the end zone, GF. The messed up "is it or isn't it?" offside vs. false start happens every week, I'll grant you, but that's nothing compared to a PI on the offense when the DB is facemasking him from here to next week (yes, I've seen that). That major stuff doesn't happen all the time.

That's why there's a grading system. It'll never be perfect, which is why we have replay, which is ALSO evolving.

It was a major gaffe in Lambeau this Sunday. Luckily for the NFL the Saints missed the GW FG or it would have been front page headlines again:

Is this still a real story? I thought we already knew that refs suck. :dead:
