I kind of thought that might have been your angle but wasn't sure....San Diego is certainly DI as compared to Fort Lewis or Chadron St.
If Georgia Southern can count Jacksonville as DI and ODU can count Campbell as DI, Cal Poly can certainly count San Diego as DI. We all should be able to count San Diego as a DI win.
North Dakota State has been the masters of scheduling nonsensical DI opponents... St. Francis, Prairie View A & M, etc... I always wish Eastern would attract some of these kind of teams instead of scheduling the most difficult opps we can find. Sometimes it really helps the team to learn to beat the tar out of somebody.
As you well know, Dopa, it's harder for us teams out west to get a full D-I schedule. Ideally, I'd like to get a D-I powerhouse AND a D-I cupcake to balance things. If you win both, you get D-I credit for both and don't have to worry about the stigma of having played a D-II.
Aye, there's the rub about having non-FCS teams on the schedule. If it's an FBS, you get brownie points if you win (and even if there's a close loss), but if you take too many, you run the risk of scheduling yourself out of the playoffs. If it's a D-II, you BETTER win, and even then you get penalized, regardless of who it is. If you HAVE to take a D-II, you might as well get a cupcake like NMHU a couple of years ago, because you'll get the same treatment as if you take on a D-II powerhouse like TX A&I or Grand Valley State (which would add a HUGE risk of a loss). The same could be said of D-III (to a lesser degree) and NAIA (most being roughly equivalent to D-II).
The conclusion, then, if your situation allows for it, is to just chuck the non-FCS games altogether. That's easy out on the East Coast with all those FCS conferences of varying degrees of ability out there. It's NOT so easy here out West, because pretty much all Western FCS teams are in the Big Sky now. So there are several choices, none all that palatable. Take D-IIs and risk missing out on the playoffs due to a lack of D-I wins, take FBS games (particularly bodybag games) and risk scheduling yourself out of the playoffs, split the difference, or schedule in-conference OOC games. In the Sky, we've obviously taken the latter route, with enough room for teams to experiment with the other options. It's ugly no matter how you slice it. There IS one other option, which is to schedule cross-country FCS OOC games. We've all likely done this in the past (I remember Sac having a home-and-home with dearly departed Hofstra). But in these days of declining budgets, doing that is harder to come by. Montana got a home game from Liberty this year, balancing that with a trip to Boone. That's about the best I've ever seen it. I just don't know when any of us will be able to pull that off again.
SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
We ALL want this. Idaho State has road games at Utah and Washington next year. In the last 3 years ISU has played Georgia, Oklahoma, Nebraska, et al.. Boise State would have a hard time with road games like that. Ultimately, these non scholly teams are the equivalent of D3, but count as a D1 win.

You also have to be able to beat the scholarship schools to get in the playoffs.

Absolutely, however, here's my perspective: ISU failed to make the playoffs twice in the last decade despite posting 8 wins because 1 of those wins was D2.
Bio: If you're talking about that entire spread, you're likely correct about Boise. But there are those who believe that Boise is equivalent to a FCS and doesn't deserve a mention in the conversation, who are continually flummoxed by Boise's ability to beat the "big boys" in a one-off game, as they have proven in several bowl games AND in a regular season roadie at Georgia.
Of course, if any B(C)$ conference (I don't consider the Big East to be of that calibre) would bite the bullet and take them in, after an adjustment period, I fully believe that they'd be just as good as anyone out there.

It sure does, but ISU has had enough bad to last two decades.... including 3 straight 1 win seasons.
