Curt Schilling retires

BOSTON -- Curt Schilling retired from baseball Monday, ending a career in which he won World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks and was one of the game's most dominant pitchers and grittiest competitors.

The 42-year-old right-hander said on his blog he's leaving after 23 years with "zero regrets." Schilling missed all of last season with a shoulder injury after signing a one-year, $8 million contract.

Quick question: Schilling did not pitch last year but was on a major league roster all year. Does he go on the ballot in 2013 or 2014?

I'm going to say no the HOF. Schilling is going to share the ballot for perhaps 15 years with Mike Mussina, a pitcher with vastly superior career numbers. It's going to be tough to vote for Schilling and not vote for Mussina -- and since I don't think Mussina is going to make it, I don't see how Schilling makes it.

On the other hand, if enough voters think Schilling's post-season numebrs carry him, then he will probably carry Mussina in with him.

Both Schilling and Moose belong in the Hall.

Shilling was part of baseball lore for the sock game... but it was his dominance in the postseason that made him a HOFer.

Both guys, for a period of nearly 10 years were terrifying to go up against... they both put up pretty damn good numbers in the steroid era.

I tend to agree with TTBF. Schilling was dominate when it counted most. Being one that places more emphasis on the playoffs than the regular season, I weigh it more heavily what one does under pressure--his success puts him in the HOF for me. Now, I'm not saying that having impressive regular season numbers don't count, they do, but they must be very big numbers to outweigh a mediocre performance in the postseason (looking you straight in the eye Aroid).

I could be wrong, but I think the main reason Gwynn and Ripken were left off a few ballots was because some voters feel is guys like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig werent unanimous choices then no one should be. And no one ever will be. Voters today will get ridiculed for it, but its the fault of voters past.

his first two years were cups of coffee, barely up for long and when he was it was in the bullpen, his first two full seasons were in the bullpen as were parts of a couple others. He like a lot of guys who will be heading to the hall in the coming years, also lost a few months due to the 1994 strike (ya its not a lot of time but still.) In all Schilling started the equivilence of 12.8 seasons worth of games (basing it on total starts divided by normal 34 starts a #1 starter would get.) His win total doesnt look unimpressive when all that is considered.

I had the EXACT same ankle surgery as Schilling and I was out of ALL activities for 6 months. His injury was bogus bullshit. It was all a bs story to make him look like a God of some kind. If his peroneal tendon was torn he wouldn't have played during that time. When I snapped mine, not tore, snapped...I couldn't even stand up let alone pitch a game like he did. I'm glad he's done, I never did like the guy.

I HOPE Schilling gets in for one reason and one reason only: It means Blyleven and Jack Morris will get in too, and both of those guys deserve it.

Schilling may be a complete douche, but dammit, he is one of the best pitchers in history....especially in the post season.


Bloody sock or Ketchupy sock be dammed, he was a great pitcher that deserves it.


He won't get it for a long time though due to the fact he spoke his mind and said what he felt all the time. People don't like honestly. To be in the baseball HOF you have to be liked.

gotta say... if Schill gets in for his "playoff prowess" the guy who threw the greatest game every played (game 7 of the 91 WS) belongs there.

yes, i'll admit some of that is homerism... but I watched game 7 in it's entirety about a week ago... that series really does top every other on played.
