Cruel Election Irony

If the election were today & it played out like expected (see the link), Romney & Ryan would fall just short.
Ironically, the difference would be if either of them could carry their home state they'd win.
Somehow I think that should almost be mandatory - you can't win a presidential election unless those people that know you best - your home state - vote you in the majority.
I don't know the answer but that'd be a good trivia question - who was the last President elected that didn't carry his home state??

Answering my own question - it's never been done. Actually, no one has ever become President by losing both their Birth state & their Home state. In this case, Romney will try to be the first as neither Michigan nor Massachusetts look to be in play.

Re: Cruel Election Irony
Al Gore lost - that's correct. But I was asking has anyone ever WON and still lost their home state(s). After looking it up the answer is no. Carter I'm sure lost Georgia probably in '80.

Speaking of home state. In 1992 Arkansas was the only state in which Clinton topped 50%.

What if Carter's energy ideas, namely to end our dependence on foreign oil, and 30 years later echoed by GWB, would have actually been embraced at that time, and by Reagan for the next 8 years?Grizalltheway wrote:And his successor:CAA Flagship wrote: King of the dipshits.

I never knew that Kenya had electoral votes. I learn so much from these boards. Thanks!

NO doubt - Carter was ahead of his time. He bucked the Washington insider power establishment, and was labeled a failure because of it.kalm wrote:What if Carter's energy ideas, namely to end our dependence on foreign oil, and 30 years later echoed by GWB, would have actually been embraced at that time, and by Reagan for the next 8 years?Grizalltheway wrote:

If you believe Wikipedia it looks like it's been done once:

I'll keep looking to see if I can find a source that doesn't have Wikipedia's reputation for potential inaccuracy.

Bush lost Conneticut, his birth state in both elections. Didn't Lincoln lose Kentucky as well? It's happened before.

Correct, but Bush won his home state of TX. No one has ever been elected President that didn't win either the state in which they were born or live.Ibanez wrote:Bush lost Conneticut, his birth state in both elections. Didn't Lincoln lose Kentucky as well? It's happened before.
