SoConfusion

Post by T-Dog »

Right now there is a virtual four-way tie for first.

Georgia Southern 6 - 2
Wofford 5 - 2
Appalachian State 5 - 2
Chattanooga 4 - 2
Samford 4 - 3
Citadel 4 - 3
Furman 2 - 4
Elon 1 - 5
Western Carolina 0 - 8

Despite losing today, GSU found out an hour later they won a share of the SoCon title as Samford beat Wofford. ASU gets a share if they beat Furman next week and Wofford and Chatty play in another SoCon title game eliminator next week. If Wofford wins, they get a share. If Chatty wins, they still have to beat Elon to get their share.

If it's a GSU/Wofford tie or GSU/Chatty tie, GSU gets the autobid.
If it's a GSU/ASU tie, then ASU gets the autobid.
If it's a GSU/Chatty/ASU tie, ASU gets the autobid.
If it's a GSU/Wofford/ASU tie, then we run the gammit of tiebreakers. It all depends on who finishes where. No way to tell until then.

Basically, Chatty can't win any tiebreaker so they could win a share of the SoCon and won't make the playoffs since they can only win six D1 games.

I don't care what happens, just as long as we don't have to go to GSU in the playoffs and face that Triple Option again. :tothehand: :ohno:

I have tried to locate the SoCon tie-breaking rules on the autobid, but failed. Just a small rut in the SoCon New Media Information Dirt Road.

tiebreakers for conferences with true round-robin play (i.e. playing all of your conference mates) are much easier to figure than those for leagues where teams don't play everyone else.

If it's an App/Wofford/GSU tie there will be a coin flip for the auto bid. That is what David Jackson and Brownie said on the radio yesterday afternoon.

How do they do a coin flip for a three way tie? Wouldn't you need a three sided coin?

Rolling a die would be better. Or even better yet, a roshambo tourney.

Thank you. That settles that. Or, does it? No more coin flips in the SoCon (in 30 years of Appalachian in FCS IIRC, they've won one coin flip and lost another).

It actually comes down to IF a team is eliminated or dropped in the process as an odd-man out in a tie-breaking scenario which does not determine a clear winner. I.E., in a three-way tie, if Woffle is not eliminated due to their loss to (5)Samford, they receive the auto-bid because (6)The Citadel beat both The Convicts and The Hillbillys.

That would suck. Go, Chatty! Not this year, Vermin.

A. In the case of a two-way tie, the automatic bid will be awarded to the winner of the game between the tied teams during the regular season;
Image
The Hillbillys win head-to-head against The Convicts
The Convicts win head-to-head against The Woffle (and UTC)
B. In the event of a three-way tie, the won-loss records of the tied teams against each other is first considered (i.e., head to head concept). If the teams are still tied, then each team’s record against the highest seeded team not involved in the tie is considered.

The Woffle . . . . . . . 6-2
The Convicts . . . . . . 6-2
The Hillbillys . . . . . . 6-2

(4) Chattanooga . . . . . 5-3 (with loss to The Woffle and W v. Elon - wins over Sam & El Cid)
(5) Samford . . . . . . . . 5-3 (with W at Elon - beat The Woffle and El Cid)
(6) The Citadel . . . . . . 5-3 (beat both The Convicts & The Hillbillys)

The mocs lost to both ASU and GSU. They cannot win any tiebreaker involving either (or both) team(s).

The only tie that would be complicated is GSU, ASU, and WC since each team would be 1-1 against the others. The only scenario where ASU doesn't get the auto bid is an ASU loss to the purple pukes.

There is no *clear winner* in the three-way tie between the 3 teams.

There would be no *clear winner* with the '3-way teams' using (4)Samford and (5)Woffle as the tie-breaker.

(6)Bellhops beat both The Convicts & The Hillbillys

Ding! Ding! Ding!

UTC beat The Citadel --- we have a winner.

Edit: AHHHHH - I got it. Appalachian would be 2-0 in the 3-way against 1-1 for The Convicts and UTC

Never-mind

So here's the word about the autobid.

We all know ASU, Wofford and GSU each won a share of the SoCon with 6-2 records.

The big point of contention is whether the 4th place teams would be ranked or not. It appears that teams with similar final records will be grouped together (ASU's game notes confirmed this).

Samford is 5-3 and done. UTC and El Cit are 4-3 and have games left against Elon and Furman, respectively.

-If UTC and El Cit wins, then Samford, UTC and El Cit would be tied for fourth. ASU went 2-1, GSU went 2-1 and Wofford went 2-1. ASU, GSU and Wofford all would have defeated the remaining teams, Elon, Furman and Western. Then it would come down to who gave up the least points in SoCon play. GSU gave up 163, Wofford gave up 164 and ASU gave up 238. GSU gets the autobid.

-If UTC wins and El Cit loses, then Samford and UTC would be tied for fourth. ASU went 2-0, GSU went 2-0 and Wofford went 1-1 against those two. Wofford would be eliminated and then it would revert back to head-to-head between ASU and GSU. ASU gets the autobid.

-If UTC and El Cit loses, then Samford would be alone in fourth. ASU won, GSU won and Wofford loss. Wofford would be eliminated and then it would revert back to head-to-head between ASU and GSU. ASU gets the autobid.

So here's what it boils down to.

If Furman beats El Citadel, ASU gets the autobid. If El Citadel beats Furman, GSU gets the autobid.

And before anyone else says, yes the SoCon was vague on this, but this is apparently how it goes.
