Big Sky Power Rankings 11-12

Post by JALMOND »

One more week in the conference season to determing who gets to represent the conference in the playoffs and qutie the games going on this week during the official "rivalry" week. Many teams hoping to move on to the playoffs and many teams hoping to ruin their rival's chances at continuing. Going into the final week, here are the power rankings for this week (last week's rankings in parenthesis). All based on my opinion and all open for discussion. One more week for the spoilers.

1. Montana State (1)---The Bobcats looked recently like a strong playoff team as they were definitely hotter than the frigid weather at home against Portland State last week. They are beginning to fire on all cylinders now, ready for the playoffs. One more hurdle to overcome, the Brawl at Missoula this weekend.

2. Eastern Washington (3)---In what was supposed to be just a bump in the road last week, the Eagles found themselves in a real fight with UC-Davis. They are most likely playoff bound but need to regroup. This weekend finds them playing for the Dam Cup at Portland State.

3. Northern Arizona (2)---The Lumberjacks took on their rival from the north, Southern Utah last week and found themselves in too big of a hole that they could not climb out of. They should be playoff bound as well, but the loss has made this week's game with Cal Poly a bit more interesting.

4. Cal Poly (5)---Potholes and pitfalls galore last week, the Mustangs took care of business adding to Idaho State's woes last week. Relishing in Southern Utah's upset over Northern Arizona, the Mustangs now have new life and can end strong with a win at NAU.

5. Sacramento State (4)---The Hornets had the week off and watched some interesting outcomes with the heavy hitters in the conference. They would like to be included and will need a win in the Causeway at UC-Davis. Finally the first time this Classic is huge in the Big Sky.

6. Southern Utah (8)---The Thunderbirds up and down season came to an end last week, but not before they knocked Northern Arizona down a bit. Clearly the Jeckyl and Hyde of the conference, they showed they could beat anyone and conversly, anyone could beat them.

7. Montana (6)---The Grizzlies had last week off to regroup and refocus for a one game showdown with Montana State. Playing spoiler is something new, but the Grizzlies would love to show the Bobcats that they are not a big as they might think.

8. North Dakota (7)---The no-name Dakotans took a week off last week and now get the chance to cool off a rejuvinated Northern Colorado team. What may have seemed an easy game just a few weeks ago has all of a sudden become interesting as a "rivalry" should be.

9. Northern Colorado (10)---The Bears have quickly turned their season around. Wins like last week at Weber State will go far to make this a competitive program in the conference. A win this week at home against a good North Dakota team will go even further.

10. Weber State (9)---The Wildcats took it on the chin last week at home against Northern Colorado last week. They are also trying to rebuild and, even with one win, have remained competitive throughout the year. This week they finish against the hapless Idaho State team.

11. Portland State (11)---Understatement of the year was that the will of the Vikings to be competitive last week at Montana State probably was gone when they woke up to 10 degrees at Bozeman. Chances are that it won't be that cold this week back in Portland where they face Eastern Washington.

12. UC-Davis (12)---Last week the Aggies threw everything at Eastern Washington and almost walked out of Cheney with a surprising win. They still have a chance to throw the wrench into the hopes of another conference foe as they welcome their nemesis, Sacramento State.

13. Idaho State (13)---The Bengals went to Cal Poly last week and got blown out. Thankfully, they only have one game left in this nightmare and they welcome Weber State to their home, for what its worth.

RECAP: 1-4 together with 5 right behind, 6-8 a bit further behind with 9 gaining, 10 alone, with 11-12 fading and 13 in another time zone.

I suspect that a number of teams that played the Aggies might not put them at #12 - Portland State excepted.

Seeing how we beat Sac St, SUU, and Montana I would have UND at least 6th not 8th.

Weber is easily ahead of ISU. I might even put Carroll College ahead of ISU at this point...

That's not much of a stretch....

The sad part is that ISU seems to have gotten worse as the season progressed.

Agreed.

Same record as Montana, beat them head-to-head.

I think some posters forget these are "power" rankings, and are based on week-to-week performance, and not necessarily based on head to head matchups or bodies of work.

Plus, it's 7th vs. 8th, WGAF?
