It's been there for a long time and isn't likely to end anytime soon.

The only safe conferences right now are the Big Ten, SEC and Pac-12.

The Big XII is only as strong while Texas is there, and that could change.

The ACC will survive, but it has to worry about schools leaving for the SEC.

The Big East is toast, especially if another team leaves to take Maryland's spot in the ACC.

Once UCONN or ville leaves for the ACC, I bet Boise and San Diego head to the MWC. And that would officially kill the BE conference as a football conference. :ohno:

Rutgers Joins the Big Ten, Leaving Big East Behind
Image
Rutgers is joining the Big Ten, leaving the Big East behind and cashing in on the school's investment in a football program that only 10 years ago seemed incapable of competing at the highest level.

The school announced its decision Tuesday at a campus news conference attended by Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany, Rutgers President Robert Barchi and athletic director Tim Perenetti.

"The Big Ten is really where Rutgers belongs," Barchi said.

Not so fast. There will still be football teams that need a home, they can jump ship, or they can raid other conferences. The Big East might die, or they might add schools like UMass and East Carolina.

The Big East is on life support, but it's too early to pull the plug.

I think you're technically correct but the BE is already dead as an AQ conference. How much further will it slip? How much more appealing will it be to ECU than Conference USA?

Depending in which Big East schools are left, you may stlll have better football than C-USA, you will have better basketball and better TV markets.

Report: Maryland, Rutgers In Leaders, Illinois To Legends

Penn State will be making less trips to Champaign, according to ESPN's conference expansion guru Brett McMurphy, as Illinois will be moving to the Legends Division when Maryland and Rutgers make their way into the Big Ten come 2014 (Rutgers is supposed to have a 27-month exit period which would keep them from moving until 2015, but sources say they hope to move a year earlier (https://twitter.com/TomLuicci/status/270575676971683840" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

Not as of right now.
With the Big East on shaky ground, there has been speculation that Boise State and San Diego State could renege on their commitments to the Big East and stay in the Mountain West.

Both schools on Tuesday publicly stated they had no plans to bail on the Big East.

"I can say the Big East took a hit," San Diego State athletic director Jim Sterk said during a weekly press conference streamed on the Internet. "It may take some others, but I can tell you the league will continue to be strong. ... I'm excited about the future and wanted to make sure that was clear and on the direction San Diego State University was taking."

Wow. So why would they want to dissolve the BE. Aside from not wanting football schools to dictate terms to them, what benefit (loss of NCAA bids, loss of a TV deal, loss of a conference) will this give the bball schools?

They could hold their own destiny then. If the non-football schools wait for UCONN, Cincy or Louisville to jump ship, it might be too late for the Seton Hall's to make a calculated move to the A10 or a new Catholic League.

SDSU does exactly what Boise State does. Boise is looking hard at coming back to the MWC. SDSU will be in the MWC in a New York minute if BSU pulls the plug on the Big East.
