In the end EWU could not tackle SHSU runners, making SHSU the better team.

I'm hesitant to say this was a good. It was entertaining though.

Exactly. NDSU better find a passing game or they're probably gonna lose.CatBlitz22 wrote:With what? Another 70 yards passing?SeattleGriz wrote:NDSU will expose them again.

Georgia Southern's offense did better a second time around, you gotta figure Sam Houston's will too.

Sounds like similar comments last year. It's really not easy to judge one teams performance against a good defense to another teams performance against a defense that is not as good.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Exactly. NDSU better find a passing game or they're probably gonna lose.CatBlitz22 wrote:

Re: EWU v. Sam Houston State
Well shoot. I wrote last week that Sam Houston State can be burned playing its "in your face" defense by a passing team. Just a shame for Eastern Washington that for some reason they couldn't do it in the first half. I guess the QB had something to do with it. Who knows? I do think the opportunities were there in the first half. They just didn't hit them.
Bad news and good news for Sam Houston State. Bad news is they'll be facing a much better defense next week. Good news is it's not the kind of offense that's likely to be able to take advantage of their weak spot on defense. Looks like probably another defensive championship game.
Don't you know Eastern Washington coaches and players would love a "re-do" on that one. Absolutely no doubt their offense is capable of scorching Sam Houston State's defense and no doubt that they wasted the first 30 minutes of the game in that regard.

Re: EWU v. Sam Houston State
I think Georgia Southern's offense was a lot better this year than last. In particular I think their quarterback this year was far more explosive and dangerous as a runner and that's important to their offense. I think Sam Houston State's offense is good but I don't know if it's any better than last year. Also they lost two offensive linemen today and I don't know if they'll be able to play...or play at 100%...for the championship game. This is one spot where the post semifinal layoff may help.Exactly. NDSU better find a passing game or they're probably gonna lose.

I think NDSU is vulnerable because of their offense but they've pretty much shown that they can win without their offense having to light it up. It'll be interesting.
Didn't happen last year but I think NDSU has a chance to wear Sam Houston State down if they don't get behind by a substantial margin. I haven't looked it up but just looking I think they're a lot bigger on the line of scrimmage than Sam Houston State is.
But no doubt it's a good matchup for Sam Houston State in terms of Sam Houston State defense vs. opponent's offense.

Re: EWU v. Sam Houston State
To beat SHSU, you gotta expose their secondary. Their front 7 is very good. NDSU will need some more productivity in the passing game, IMO. I'm not sure they will be able to out-score the Kats bein one-dimensional. Just my opinion.

Re: EWU v. Sam Houston State
Remember that the Bison beat SHSU without using that formula last year. They were only 10 of 20 passing for just 120 yards. They won the game by holding the Bearkats to 6 points (two field goals) and 215 total yards. 95 yards rushing.EWURanger wrote:To beat SHSU, you gotta expose their secondary. Look, I know they were fortunate to get by Georgia Southern. But the Eagles did average 409 yards per game rushing in their previous games. They got 302 rusing yards at 5.2 yards per carry against Georgia. NDSU held them to 271 yards rushing at 4.9 yards per carry. It's a very good defense and I don't think Sam Houston State's rushing offense...as good as it is...is as good as Georgia Southern's was this year.
It's different personnel on defense for NDSU this year than it was last year but I sure as heck don't see any indication that they've taken a step back on that side of the ball. To me, if anything, they're a little better. Last year they finished 20th in FCS total defense giving up 315 yards per game. And they gave up 12.7 points per game. They'll lose a little ground when the Georgia Southern stats get included but before that game they were giving up 207 yards and 10.8 points per game. They're really good on that side of the ball.
One of the best things Georgia Southern was able to do is burn NDSU with their passing game because the Bison had to be so focused on their running game. I don't know if SHSU will be able to do that because I don't think their running game is AS difficult to stop as Georgia Southern's was.
Obviously things happen all the time that we don't expect but I certainly wouldn't be SURPRISED if they shut Sam Houston State's offense down again.

Re: EWU v. Sam Houston State
Actually I think it's more a matter of their secondary being good. I know that sounds weird after having said they can be burned and seeing them burned today. But the reason they stop the run so well is that they feel like their DBs can cover man on man so they press the line of scrimmage and have a lot of people in the box. I think that's why they're so hard to run against.Their front 7 is very good.
So if you've got good receivers and can throw the ball you have the chance to make them pay for that as Eastern Washington did in the second half today.

Very proud of me Eags and congrats to SHSU. To make it back to back title games is impressive. Good luck against the Bison!

Re: EWU v. Sam Houston State
very similar to the Griz game last year. Dug a huge hole for themselves and then made good adjustments to shut SHS down. Too big of a hole to dig out of. Way to hang Eags' and not give up.

Congratulations. As much as I tried to hex SHSU, they won it on the field. I am obviously still a little butt hurt from losing to you last year.htownbearkat wrote:We are back in the Natty.

Re: EWU v. Sam Houston State
Yeah, Eastern playing like absolute ass in the first half did us in. I still thought the team played awfully valiantly, but it's hard to lose the turnover game by 3 and shank 33 yard field goals and still beat a team as good as Sam Houston State.JohnStOnge wrote:Well shoot. I think the pick-6 killed us because we stuck with Padron for several more series after that and he clearly was "damaged goods." He completely started second guessing all of his throws and we basically spent the next few drives stuck in reverse. Plus, one complete peculiarity of Eastern this year has been horrible defense to start a game. I thought the ESPN commentator said it best "it's not like Sam Houston State is doing things differently, they're doing exactly what they always do. The Eagles just look like they haven't studied the film."
The sad story of playing garbage defense to open a game was repeated a lot this year, we just found way to overcome it against lesser teams. But you can't give up 4 TDs in 7 possessions and a pick 6 in one half against a team like the Bearkats.
Re: EWU v. Sam Houston State
Still can't get over how Adams went beast mode in the second half. Padron set a school record by throwing for 6 TD's against ISUR last weekend, but Adams tied that today by throwing for 6 in one half. Serious question, has anyone thrown for 6 TD's in a half in the playoffs, or otherwise?

I knew it would be a dogfight today, just didn't think we would go down that much at first. Hell of a game, but like I said, it was close and we didn't give up (2506). Congrats to SHSU, they were the better team and they deserved to win. Now back up your arrogance and beat those bi-son clowns.
