but the justification with Palin was (and again... I don't really believe this): Palin was running as a "my family values are better than yours" "I'm pious, and want to legislate to make you adhere to my family values" "we demand abstinence-only sex ed because anything else encourages promiscuity"... and then having her unwed, teenage daughter turn up pregnant... sort of seemed... massively hypocritical to some people.
again... i disagree with the technique... i think Palin was beatable for being a bobble-headed dingbat who shouldn't be trusted with anything bigger than a Subway franchise, not for the faults of her kids.
As for who doesn't use their family... a lot of candidates don't. They don't run for President (mostly because in a race for Pres. the celebrity gossip press pays attention... which means all bets are off since they are horrible people...
but a large number of Senate/Congressional/State-level candidates don't involve their families.

I've been independent for 25 years so I must have started out really stupid because I haven't finished learning yet. I've always been fiscally conservative and socially liberal so neither party has really appealled to me enough to make we want to say I'm a Republican or I'm a Democrat. I agree with you as far as families being off limits. As a parent you do the best job you can raising your kids and you hope they turn out OK but every kid is different and there are a lot of factors that you don't control so it isn't completely up to you or your values. I never thought it was a big deal when the Bush daughters were caught partying because that is a normal part of growing up for a lot of kids. The thing that always bothered me was when they were in a position to represent the U.S. and they didn't do it well. Laura would rationalize it that they didn't ask for this life so it wasn't their fault. Case in point, early in the Bush Presidency, Laura traveled to Paris for a state function and one of the daughters went with her. The daughter got out of the limo and walked to plane in front of the press wearing jeans and flip flops and generally looking like she was walking home after spending the night at some strange guy's house. She got off of plane looking exactly the same. Now she might not have asked to be the President's daughter but in this instance whether she wants to or not she is representing the United States of America. If she didn't want to do it with dignity and class than she shouldn't have chosen to gone to Paris.
