I've been independent for 25 years so I must have started out really stupid because I haven't finished learning yet. I've always been fiscally conservative and socially liberal so neither party has really appealled to me enough to make we want to say I'm a Republican or I'm a Democrat. The funny thing is that I was more liberal in my younger days and have become more conservative as I've gotten older so does that mean that the more you learn the more conservative you get?

Actually there are studies out there that would show this to be true.

the higher level of education achieved the more liberal one tends to be.

the income thing is counter-intuitive... Repubs beat Dems in some of the poorer demographics (not quite the bottom earners... but just above) they also win the upper-middle class... but above that... the dems tend to do well.

it's a part of political science that says that people professing to be "independent" are often saying it because they think it sounds "smarter" than admitting to partisan leanings. however, put those same people in a voting booth, and they will follow one party over the other in almost every circumstance.

In my career, I've found it was one of the most true things I learned in college.

I voted for Clinton and Bush II in both elections. I don't regret the Clinton votes. In the first Bush II election I bought the compassionate conservative sales pitch and in the second I couldn't bring myself to vote for that cardboard cut-out Kerry. I've since learned my lesson and will vote for a Libertarian, Green or write-in candidate as a protest vote if neither party gives me a choice I think is right for the office. I have voted for my Blue Dog Democratic Congresswoman but the EFCA vote will be considered in whether I vote for her in the next election.

The problem with the "political science" as you described it is that while it might be true in the aggregate it glosses over individual differences and tries to lump everyone into a easily definable voting bloc.

Oddly enough, despite your presumption, no, I didn't really care that Jeb's daughter had a drug problem, lot's of people do... what bothered me about that situation was that she was using who her father was to avoid doing time in the pokey like anyone else would have after being arrested.

I don't answer election phone calls and just throw the direct mail in the recycle bin so I don't think they're influencing my voting. I tend to vote for Reps because I'm fiscally conservative, pro-market, etc. I tend to vote for Dems because I believe in investing in education and infrastructure, protecting the environment, etc. I probably lean Rep more than Dem because fiscal conservatism is high on my list of priorities (Is it wrong to expect the government to manage its check book the way that I have to manage mine?) but neither party represents the breadth of my opinions. And my problem with Bush was that he spent money like a stereotypical Democrat while also being a social nazi.

"independence" presumes you don't support one party or another. You do. So do I... the difference appears to be, I'm okay with that. Of course, various levels of candidates and parties have kept me employed for the better part of the decade... so there's that factor.

I gave up a lucrative corporate career to do it too. you don't get rich working as an operative... the highest paid consultants and media guys make good bank... but they are about 5% of the industry... the rest of us scrape out a living because we believe in what we do.
