Which SEC team will win the 2013 national championship?

Post by Skjellyfetti »

I've done this the last couple of years. LSU won the 2011 poll. Alabama won the 2012 poll.

Everyone's probably going to pick Bama this year... and, rightfully so. But, I'm going with Georgia. :thumb:

Um, Oregon's not in the SEC. Some numbnutz around here seem to have the idea that only SEC teams are eligible. Unfortunately, they seem to have some recent history on their side. Another reason why this "championship" is bogus....

Alabama's the easy pick and Georgia is 2nd so I went out on a limb and picked ArKansas. Bielema gets the team to believe again after the Petrino/Smith disaster of 2012 and leads them to the promised land. Florida would have been my other choice but that will depend on how they react to the beatdown L'ville gave them.

And Georgia choking is almost predictable as an OVC team losing in the 1st round of the FCS playoffs.

Nope. If the 4 team playoff, starting in 2014, had been in place, would have had:

#1 ND vs #4 Oregon
#2 Bama vs #3 Florida

If it was an 8 team playoff:
#1 ND vs #8 LSU
#2 Alabama vs #7 UGA
#3 Florida vs #6 Stanford
#4 Oregon vs # 5 Kansas State (which is what we had in the Fiesta Bowl)

I don't think that's what it would have been. You need to have FSU, Louisville and maybe even NIU in there because of conference championships and rules that got those three teams in BCS games to begin with. Either way, ATM would not have been in.

When the 4 team playoffs start it will be the top 4 in the BCS standings, regardless of conference.
So when it eventually expands to 8, then its natural to assume would be the top 8 in the BCS standings....

I could be wrong, but I thought the four teams would be chosen by a committee similar to basketball, FCS football, etc.
Just as notably, they also agreed to move away from the polls and computer ratings currently used to determine the nation's No. 1 and 2 teams in favor of a basketball-style selection committee comprised of college administrators. That committee will decide the fate of teams' national championship hopes as well as their share of an annual $610 million ESPN contract announced last week. "It will be one of the most prestigious assignments in sports, and one of the most scrutinized," Bill Hancock, executive director of the new postseason system, said this summer. "And the members will need to understand what they're getting into."

For a glimpse into the vexing challenges the committee will face, SI enlisted 11 athletic directors representing each FBS conference and the independents. (The lineup originally included four conference commissioners or executives, much like the basketball committee, but following a Nov. 12 BCS meeting in which our project was discussed, all reluctantly pulled out.) Former NCAA executive Greg Shaheen, who for the past 12 years served as the lead facilitator for the men's basketball selection committee, spearheaded the exercise for SI. He compiled detailed fact sheets on each team, established voting protocol and nimbly moderated the selection process.
The mock selection committee ultimately comes up with the same matchups as 1-4 in the BCS would come up with, but that's not necessarily how it would work. :twocents:

OK, then, this is one of those rare occasions when KY is right and I am wrong. ;)

Regardless, they'll be taking the "top" 4 teams as they see it.

When it eventually goes to 8 in the 2020s or 2030s, then they'll likely take the top 8 as they see it. Current BCS with AQs is 10 teams (6 AQs and 4 At large). I don't know if you'd see AQ's with only 8 teams.

I will rephrase my statement. If FBS had a playoff similar to FCS, Texas A&M would have won.

The pollsters had no idea how good anyone was this year with their rankings, example Notre Dame #1. Notre Dame would have been a good B1G team, that would have lost to most any SEC bowl eligible team in a bowl.

Why do you say that? Just because they beat Alabama in the regular season?
