If that were the case, there would be no arguments. All precedent says that the starting quarterback does NOT lose his job due to injury; he loses it because he's screwing up. No objective metric shows Smith screwing up. They got lucky in the move working out. Harbaugh, by going against precedent in this malicious fashion, would be reviled around the league if it hadn't worked.
