No big surprise ... was told a couple of weeks ago Hal wasn't taking JMU job.

Looks like you might be right.slulionsfan wrote:Is this a done deal? My source tells me Hal is not taking the JMU job ... he was in touch with him directly last week.BDKJMU wrote:JMU needed a change in OC after the last 4 seasons:
6-5 no playoffs
6-5 no playoffs
8-5 playoffs
7-4 no playoffs
When in every season JMU had a playoff caliber defense, but a mediocre to subpar offense for a team from the top 4-5 conferences.
I was hoping a OC that had a successfull resume of running a balanced, pro style offense. There probably were some out there that were interested in JMU from the Div III, Div II, and lesser I-AA level, but none with the resume and name recognition Mumme has. Plus Mumme is from West Texas, same as Mickey, and they are friends going way back. No doubt Mickey is on the hot seat, esp after seeing what what happened with Moore & Keeler, and going with Mumme was safer and more comfortable than going with a relatively unknown.

"Matthew Stoss @MatthewStoss
I heard today that new OC Hal Mumme is on campus already, has met players and could start running offense meetings this week."
So if he ends up not coming to JMU, the JMU board is going to have a meltdown. Me if he didn't come? Well, that would depend on who JMU got instead. I'm more of a fan of old school smash mouth. Ok with a pro style offense. Not to keen on this finesse Air Raid.

Re: Hal Mumme to become offensive coordinator at JMU
Not necessarily. If Mumme isn't coming to JMU, someone else will be hired as OC. JMU could still end up passing more than had in the past, but likely not nearly as much as an Air Raid type offense. As I said before I'd be happy with a balanced pro style.bluehenbillk wrote:Word is out now that Mumme is in fact NOT coming to JMU.

Apparently Texas. (Speculation on the JMU board is Texas Tech).slulionsfan wrote:Well, I was told this after the date of the tweet ... doesn't mean he won't take it but heard he was looking at jobs out on the west coast.BDKJMU wrote:

"..........I'm told that JMU was delaying comment on the Mumme situation, in part, because the native Texan's new school wasn't prepared Thursday to announce his hiring as offensive coordinator. The reason: It hasn't told the current OC that he's being replaced. The school is believed -- but this is not confirmed -- to be in Mumme's native Texas.
This much we know: JMU was planning to pick up Mumme at an area airport Friday in preparation for a press conference to announce his hiring. Madison also signed paperwork this week related to Mumme's hiring, indicating that all systems were "go" as of Monday.
The deal collapsed Wednesday, a source said.
Mumme would have made $100,000 a year as JMU's offensive coordinator, two sources said. That's about one-third to one-fifth what an experienced coordinator at a BCS program earns.
Madison has re-posted the offensive coordinator's job........."

Re: Hal Mumme to become offensive coordinator at JMU
Well, at least the DL coach hiring was made official. JC Price, a 95' AA at VT who spent a couple seasons with the Colts, coached JMU's DL 04'-11. He left for Marshall a yr ago, replaced last season by a couple of very young coaches, both of whom were former JMU players. JMU's DL had a lot of talent last yr, but underachieved. Some of that was due to injury, and some of that was due to losing Price. Well, got a new old school DL coach. Hopefully JMU's DL will be back to its old dominate self next season.
Football Names Hanson Assistant Coach

HARRISONBURG, Va., February 26, 2013 - James Madison University Football has named Jeff Hanson as its new defensive line coach, head coach Mickey Matthews announced today.
Hanson, previously the University of Virginia defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, brings 39 years of collegiate football coaching experience, 28 of which were at fellow Colonial Athletic Association-school Richmond.
"I am really happy we have been able to attract Jeff Hanson to coach our defensive line," Matthews said. "After coaching against him for many years, we are fortunate to have him on our sideline."
Last season was Hanson's third year for the Cavaliers after working under Head Coach Mike London at Richmond the preceding two years as the defensive line coach, head of recruiting and assistant head coach. Hanson recruited well for the Cavaliers, bringing in talented young players to Virginia and earning the school top-30 rankings in recruiting for 2011 and 2012.
Prior to his hiring, the Cavs struggled defensively surrendering 173.8 yards rushing per game during the 2009 season. However, two years later in 2011 the team improved to number three in total defense and number five in defending the run in the ACC, while only giving up 139.5 rushing yards per game.
Before his time under London at UVA, Hanson coached at six different schools including Richmond ('71-'79, '89-'06, and '08-'09), VMI ('07), West Texas State ('87-'88), Southwest Texas State ('83-'86), Lamar ('82-'83) and Marshall ('80-'81). While working with the Richmond Spiders, he helped the team to a 2008 FCS National Championship and one year later, a share of the 2009 CAA title.
During the 2008 season, Hanson guided Lawrence Sidbury and Sherman Logan to possibly the best season ever by a pair of defensive ends in Richmond history. The tandem combined for 17.5 of the teams 36 sacks and both earned All-CAA honors for their efforts.
A native of Beloit, Wisconsin, Hanson graduated from Beloit High School in 1967. He played linebacker for Richmond and was part of the 1968 Tangerine Bowl Championship team.
Hanson remained with the Spiders as a graduate assistant, coaching the freshmen defensive lineman from 1971-73 while completing his degree in physical education and his master of education. Hanson then became a full-time member of Richmond's staff, working with the tight ends and receivers during his first year and with the defense over the next four seasons.
Hanson and his wife DeDe have three daughters, Laurie, Kristin and Katie.
