I like Marc Ouellet of Canada. Best slap shot in the group!

The Irish have a pool on this. I think the cardinal from Ghana is leading but IIRC he isn't a serious contender.

Father Guido Sarducci would make a great pope.

The pope also offered the following mealy-mouthed apology for the catholic church's significant role in fostering the abuse and torture of these children.Wikipedia
There has long been significant historiographical and popular controversy about the conditions experienced by students in the residential schools. While day schools for First Nations, Metis and Inuit children always far outnumbered residential schools, a new consensus emerged in the early twenty-first century that the latter schools did significant harm to Aboriginal children who attended them by removing them from their families, depriving them of their ancestral languages, and exposing many of them to physical and sexual abuse at the hands of staff and other students. This consensus was symbolized by the June 11, 2008 public apology offered, not only by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on behalf of the Government of Canada, but also by the leaders of all the other parties in the Canadian House of Commons.[1] As well, just nine days prior, the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established to uncover the truth about the schools. As of 2012 the Commission's hearings are ongoing.
The other issue with Ouellet is his brother is a convicted pedophile. His Holiness recalled that since the earliest days of her presence in Canada, the Church, particularly through her missionary personnel, has closely accompanied the indigenous peoples. Given the sufferings that some indigenous children experienced in the Canadian Residential School system, the Holy Father expressed his sorrow at the anguish caused by the deplorable conduct of some members of the Church and he offered his sympathy and prayerful solidarity. His Holiness emphasized that acts of abuse cannot be tolerated in society. He prayed that all those affected would experience healing, and he encouraged First Nations Peoples to continue to move forward with renewed hope.

Considering that 40% of all Catholics are in South America and Central America, hopefully a Latino is a serious candidate.

Re: Who is going to be the next Pope?
So Ouellet shouldn't be pope because people who worked for the Church years before Ouellet was born did bad things, and Ouellet agrees that they did bad things? And he shouldn't be a pope because his brother is a criminal? There are pedophiles in Iowa and yet we still let you guys out and about.D1B wrote:His country and his church is embroiled in one of the worst sex abuse/murder/concentration camp/slavery/genocide scandals in the world.Ivytalk wrote:I like Marc Ouellet of Canada. I'm not saying he shouldn't be pope, just that he won't, IMO, cuz of all the trouble in his country and his family.
To clarify, his brother is also a pedophile.
The church has been avoiding even this level of controversy.
BTW, St. Augustine, the last of these barbaric schools closed in 1996. So he was around.

Re: Who is going to be the next Pope?
Is there any country where there hasn't been abuse by Catholic clergy, especially if you go back hundreds of years? Why would that disqualify this guy just because there's been crimes in Canada like elsewhere? One would think his actions in response to the abuse (which have been good) would be more important, rather than the fact that abuse happened. And to clarify, whatever his brother is has no real bearing on this guy - they aren't electing his brother.D1B wrote:Relax, Francis.GannonFan wrote:

It's vital for the church to maintain the myth of divinity or infallibility of the pope. The pope's brother being a pedophile, in an age where your church is righfully being hammered with an exploding worldwide scandal, is something they don't want to deal with in an age of instant information and growing discontent with the church.
They did exactly what I said they'd do:
1. America too hot, gave up on Europe and went with Latin American, from a country with few active abuse cases in the media.
BTW, amongst all the subterfuge with conclave, did you notice there are two new exploding child abuse issues breaking? Scotland and Joliet, Il.

The Conclave begins..
https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/vatic ... lic-churchCONCLAVE QUICK RECAP
•The College of Cardinals began meeting in Vatican City Wednesday, May 7, 2025, to elect a new pope as the Bishop of Rome.
•A papal conclave is an ancient electoral process through the Catholic Church where those under the age of 80 in the College of Cardinals vote to elect a new pontiff.
•The conclave began in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel where cardinals are being kept in strict isolation to keep them far from any outside influence from the rest of the world.
•Pope Francis, the 266th Vicar of Christ, was elected in 2013 and died on April 21, 2025.
•Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle and Hungarian Cardinal Peter Erdo, among others, are floated possible pope candidates.
•The College of Cardinals will signal to the world that a new pope has been selected when white smoke billows from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.
•Each time the College of Cardinals votes on a new pope but does not elect one, the end of a voting round will be signified with black smoke from the Sistine Chapel's chimney.
