OMG!!! Holy rollers now have "major reason"...

Post by catamount man »

... to blast Obama with his latest "we are not a Christian nation" speech in Turkey. Actually, he's right and I am a Christian saying that. America has NEVER named Christianity, or any other religion, the national religion and to do so would be a violation of the Constitution. But this won't matter to the evangelical, tongue talking, aisle running, pew jumping bunch that FLOOD the religious right.

Obama will now become the long awaited anti-Christ they have waited for to bring about the end of the world. Meanwhile, those of us in more mainstream Christianity sects who try to look at things with an open mind will be lambasted as "wimpy Christians". Thanks Obama, for once you should have kept your mouth shut.

Now, his comments have given the religious right what they've been CRAVING since election day. Smooth move ex-lax.

...and the split between the conservatives and the Bible thumpers widens. The Republicans are in tatters after Bush II. Obama knows it and can afford to make any statement he wants.

I'm not sure the reaction will be that extreme but if it is maybe this is a debate we need to have.

True, but I fret this gives them what they want as a rallying point. Not that I am a big Obama fan by any means, but dang, the religious right whines, moans, pisses, stomps and stammers which is so what Christ was not like.

Congress specifically stated in the Treaty with Tripoli (ratified in 1790, therefore law) that ".....the United States are in no sense a christian nation....". The "christian nation" thing has always been a Big Lie that the wackjob wing of the Republican repeats ad nauseam.

I don't think that Obama really cares what the radical Christian right thinks. Good to hear a president actually come out & say that this nation is not "Christian". Kudos to him!

1. Not all the States had ratified our Constitution at that point.

2. A lawyer will question if the phrasing of a treaty can actually be considered a law.

3. I will reserve my argument that it was phrased that way because we were dealing with Muslim Pirates in that treaty. Pirates do not adhere to a nations' law.

The treaty was ratified unanimously, I think it gives an accurate sense of the way they felt at the time. It's no secret that many of our founding fathers believed in god but not the christian version (which is actually just a recycled Egyptian sun-god myth).

It was signed by John Adams in 1797 and all of the former colonies had signed the Constitution at that time... and it was passed unanimously (only the third bill to pass unanimously in the country's history).

You can’t say America was founded on religious freedom/toleration because that is a lie. Some parts of America were founded by groups seeking the freedom to practice their own religion, but made it illegal for the practice of others, such as Massachusetts and Williamsburg, Va. Also, our founding fathers were Christians; some even being Deists, but that does not necessarily mean that our laws and principles are “Christian”.

As to Obama saying what he said, he’s right. We aren’t a Christian nation. We’re a nation where no matter your religion, you are free to practice without persecution.

Obama administration 'anti religious,' Gingrich says

(CNN) — Newt Gingrich said Tuesday the Obama administration is "intensely secular" and "anti-religious," the former House Speaker's second hard-hitting criticism of the new administration this week.

In an interview with FOX News, Gingrich said he strongly disagreed with Obama's choice of Harry Knox — an outspoken activist for gay rights — to the White House advisory council on faith-based initiatives.

"I think their goal is to have a very secular America in which government dominates everything," he said. "Why wouldn't you put an anti-religious, left-wing zealot on a faith-based group? It's a perfect pattern for this administration."

Since 2005, Knox has served as the director of the Human Rights Campaign, a national organization that advocates on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. He is also a former Methodist pastor.

Obama formally named Knox to the 25-member advisory council on Monday, a move that has not sat well with some Christian conservatives. The conservative Catholic League called him "unfit to serve," especially taking issue with Knox's recent comment characterizing Pope Benedict XVI as a "discredited leader" because of his opposition to gay marriage.

In a statement released earlier this week, Knox said, "The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community is eager to help the administration achieve its goals around economic recovery and fighting poverty; fatherhood and healthy families; inter-religious dialogue; care for the environment; and global poverty, health and development."
What ever shall they do without Newt (biggest hypocrit of all time) Gingrich's approval?
