BREAKING: NBA Rejects Kings Move to Seattle!!!
CBS 13 in Sac is reporting that the NBA Relocation Committee has UNANIMOUSLY rejected the proposed sale and move of the Sacramento Kings to Seattle. What this means for the future is uncertain; the only thing we know for sure is that if Seattle wants an NBA team, it will be some team NOT named the Kings.

That's a bunch of bologna, grizza. Sac has a history of supporting the Kings, even through the lean years of the '90s. What they can't stand is the Maloofs turning the Kings into the hoops version of Major League.
Get rid of the Maloofs, and the arena will sell out again....

It still needs to be voted on by the rest of the owners. Pretty much a formality as it is highly unlikely they would go against the recommendation. For Seattle, there is a team in Milwaukee that may be up for sale.SuperHornet wrote:CBS 13 in Sac is reporting that the NBA Relocation Committee has UNANIMOUSLY rejected the proposed sale and move of the Sacramento Kings to Seattle. Stern and the NBA fuck Seattle once again. Real smart move, turning down one of the biggest NBA markets in the US, and the richest owner they'd have.

Re: BREAKING: NBA Rejects Kings Move to Seattle!!!
Actually a real smart move keeping the Kings in Sacramento. A victory not just for Sac-Town, but also for Portland, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, and Orlando to name a few. Where your lone professional franchise will not be pulled out from under you at the whims of a new owner. To leave a loyal city to move to a city that may be one of the bigger markets, but had ranked third in a poll of those who "don't care" about the NBA to begin with (a sentiment echoed here on this site by many Washingtonians, Scream included). As far as the opinon of one King County executive, Dow Constantine, who was quoted by Bob Condotta from the McClatchy-Tribune as saying "I'm disappointed, but undeterred in our quest to bring NBA basketball back to the Pacific Northwest", well NBA basketball is thriving in the Pacific Northwest already, just not in Seattle.Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:Stern and the NBA **** Seattle once again. The group trying to move the Sacramento Kings to Seattle is continuing to be relentless in its pursuit.
And the NBA could be listening.
Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer, the deep-pocketed Seattle-based investors trying to acquire the team, have struck a new deal with the Kings' current owners, the Maloofs, that may create more drama in Sacramento and the league office.
Two sources told ESPN.com the Maloofs have informed their fellow owners that if their deal to sell and relocate the Kings to Seattle is not approved by league owners next week, they will not sell the team to a Sacramento-based group that promises to keep the Kings in Sacramento.
Instead, the cash-strapped Maloofs have made a "backup" agreement with the Hansen-Ballmer group to sell it 20 percent of the team for $125 million to allow the Maloofs to continue to operate the franchise.
...
To consider these incredible new figures, the NBA relocation committee is planning to re-evaluate the Hansen-Ballmer offer and has scheduled another meeting ahead of next Tuesday's full owners meeting in Dallas, sources said.

Re: BREAKING: NBA Rejects Kings Move to Seattle!!!
It’s pretty much officially over now. BOG voted 22-8 to keep the Kings in Sac. In the presser Stern stressed that the decision was about whether or not Sac was able to continue its support of an NBA franchise. Contrary to the pro-Seattle sentiment on these boards and in the media, the burden of proof has been on Sac to show they can step up and retain the Kings (which they clearly did), the Kings were Sac’s to lose, not Seattle’s. Next step is for the Maloofs to “agree” to a sale to the Sac group. Since they owe about $150M to the NBA, I am guessing that will be the leverage applied to have an agreement hammered out.

Looks like Seattle is going to have to wait until after the new TV deal the NBA gets next year when the expansion talks begin. Seattle will be the odds on favorite in the West to get the conference to 16 teams, but who in the east to balance out to 32 total? St. Louis? Cincinnati? Baltimore?

Or maybe another team can relocate. Rumor is the Bucks will be up for sell. Basically when a city won’t pony up the money to find a shiny new arena, it will be a threat to relocate. See NFL, Los Angeles to see how Seattle will be leveraged within the NBA.

Re: BREAKING: NBA Rejects Kings Move to Seattle!!!
I don't know how the NBA runs their geography, but St. Louis has traditionally been West or Central in baseball and football. That would make about as much sense as Boise State in the Big East. A return to Cincinnati (the Royals?) would be doable. I'm not certain a Baltimore bid would be able to get over the extra territorial rights fees that would be due the Washington Wizards. I think a Cincinnati Royals (or whatever name) team would have fewer fees due the Cleveland Cavaliers due to a greater distance; it might even be nil.DSUrocks07 wrote:Looks like Seattle is going to have to wait until after the new TV deal the NBA gets next year when the expansion talks begin. I wouldn't say it's over, Sac still has to hold up their end in regards to the arena deal, which was thrown together with string and sticky glue. Not to mention that the Maloofs aren't going to sell to the Ranadive group.

That douche can't step down soon enough. What a fucking prick.David Stern wrote:I'll make this short, I have a game to get to in Oklahoma City.

A victory for the small market NBA teams. This sends a message that a person cannot come in, plop a bunch of money down to buy a franchise and move it on a moment's notice to a larger market. Not just a win for Sacramento, but for Portland, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, Indianapolis, Orlando, Charlotte, etc.SDHornet wrote:It’s pretty much officially over now. This doesn't truly end it as the owners did not vote on the sale. They only voted on keeping the Kings in Sacramento. The Maloofs can still sell the team to whomever they want, however once again, subject to approval from the league.

Now the Kings can go back to being terrible, and Sacramento can go back to not giving a shit about them now that it doesn't have to anymore.
