US talks nukes with Iran

Post by slycat »

Hooray for diplomacy!!!!

In a dramatic break from previous policy, the United States will join direct talks between U.N. and European powers and Iran over Tehran's nuclear program, the State Department announced Wednesday.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/08/ ... index.html

Hopefully this works out.

Then maybe we can start talking to Cuba again and end this ridiculous standoff.

Nah! Works much better to call them "evil" and refuse to even acknowledge them until they start acting like us by ripping off every working class citizen and their descendants for the next five generations. Then they can become "trading partners."

I might also be on the minority in this one, but I see no need to be all over Iran. Since the 1920's they have been attacked 4 times and have never been physically hostile to another country. I do not understand why we have so much hate for Iran.

Obama will get a handshake and a smile and will look real pretty glowing once Iran sets up shop off Cuba's coast but by then it will be too late. But hey, WE GOT CHANGE!!!!!!!!

Because they are different then us. Plus they are Muslim so they must be bad. This is why I prefer diplomacy.

We're just going to talk to them at this point right? I don't see any harm in that.

Neither do I, but I trust the leaders of Iran, Russia, Palestine, and China about as much as I trust a rattlesnake at my ankle.

The rattlesnake is more trustworthy than the world leaders you mentioned. It won't deceive you, you know what it's intentions are.

Obama strategy: Talk, talk and talk some more! And if you don't like that, we'll take it to the Security Council, where it can die a quiet (vetoed) death.

Kim Jong Il and Ahmanuttajob are laughing their wrinkled little balls off.

or we can take the Ron Paul approach and just say goodbye to it all. We will worry when they come on our soil or in the surrounding nations/waters instead of being all over the place---wasting money...

War is always the answer if you work for Haliburton or Lockheed-Martin. :|

They're not laughing nearly as hard as when Bush labeled them part of the "Axis of Evil" and then invaded the one country that didn't have a nuke program.

Maybe we should ignore them. If a North Korean missile launch falls in the woods....

yeah isolationism works in global economy... that's either ignorant or naive...

long and the short of it is this... diplomacy can frequently lead to security. and engaging your enemies often breaks down the kind of domestically-fueled animosity that xenophobes get going.

there's a lesson that conservatives have long forgotten from TR - speak softly and carry a big stick... which doesn't mean "cock off like a douchebag and beat everyone in to submission"... that hasn't worked.

esp. with regard to Iran, the most important thing the US can do is show the everyday citizens of that country that the US isn't the "great satan" and we stop giving their government a "them" to rally their citizens against, they can get on with the business of casting off the Ayatollah's that run the country - but they won't do with a antagonist outside actor rallying them to the flag.

Same with Cuba... fastest way to end communism there is to open them up to trade. Let their people see America, let their relatives in Miami come to Havana, THAT'S the way to hasten regime change.

we do not need to be Isolationists, but we do not need to have military bases all over the world. You can participate in a global economy in many ways. We can use our "military" presence through the UN. There is no need for bases in Germany, Italy, and every other country we have them in.

We have also never been isolationists really. Since our invasions of Hawai'i we have been on a nonstop mission to make decisions for every country in the world. We need to be as you say more diplomatic and not walk around like confused goons.

Wow.. what a completely moronic statement
We built the Iranian Nuclear program and have been selling them nuclear technology for 35 years... lets not have this turn into a Bin Laden type situation...

we built Bin Laden too in so many ways - then armed him and trained him to kill Russians... then turned on him and abandon him (Look I want the guy dead to, but it's no mystery why he is they way he is)

Let's stay close to Iran - stay involved - stay aware - stay informed and keep an open dialog... the alternative is not pretty
- Big 10 Football - So boring Wisconsin is our most exciting team...
- Big 10 Football - Where 117th ranked Purdue is dominant...
- Big 10 Football - Where team speed and passing offense are not required...

Bullcrap nothings changed. Iran was never a threat. And neither is North Korea, they are just the Chihuahuas of the world trying to get attention. Was there ever any proof they were doing anything with that rocket other then launching a satellite. Nothing evil or wrong with that.

And I agree with Cleets its hard to be pissed at the weapons a country has when we gave it to them. Iraq was the same way. Our philosophy that if we arm both side they'll kill each other didn't work and now we want the weapons taken away from them.

They may not be direct threats to the United States, but they are threats to their respective regions. An Isreali - Iranian war would not be pretty, neither would an invasion of South Korea by North Korea.

I'm not suggesting that we have to make concessions to Iran (or North Korea), but I think ignoring them is stupid. Better to have dialogue with them.

I agree. Ignoring is bad talking is good. Thats why I'm happy we are now willing to talk to Iran or maybe Cuba.
