I agree the penalty shot call was bad - thought it would just be a 2 minute pp for the Hawks. I'll take it though after all the crap missed calls Detroit has gotten away with this series.
Still think Crawford is terrible - and he proved me right allowing that 50ft goal in the 2nd period - Ugh!!!

Like I said the other day, bad calls have a tendency to even themselves out.

I understand what you're saying but a bad call allowing a penalty shot is not evenly offset by a bad offsides call.AshevilleApp wrote:bodoyle wrote:I agree the penalty shot call was bad - thought it would just be a 2 minute pp for the Hawks. As a long-time Wings fan, I'm sure I will be disappointed around 10:30 pm tonight. But then again I thought they would be swept by Chicago so sometimes things aren't as bad as they seem despite giving up a 3-1 series lead.

Though giving up a 3-1 lead to the fucking Hawks may be as bad as it seems.
Was a fun playoff ride though.
This is the 14th playoff game for the Wings in roughly 3 weeks...that's extremely taxing on any team - especially the Wings

That said, congratulations to Chicago for a great comeback. I hope you beat the team from LA and eventually win the Cup.

Plenty of ppl felt that the GM Glen Sather should have been terminated as opposed to Tortorella. He more success with him than any other coach he hired.Made the playoffs 4 out of 6 yrs as Rangers Coach including a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.89Hen wrote:Wish I could say I felt bad for the guy. Imagine the uproar today if Detroit had won that game in OT last night. Just a brutal call to wipe out that would be - series winning goal with 100 seconds left. Ref had the whole play in front of him - you have to swallow your whistle there. The NBC crew rightfully crucified the guy.

I almost lost it when they disallowed that goal. Was the ref who was sitting on the rail waving his hands the one who called it off? If so, I can understand it happening before the goal was scored. If it was the ref behind the play, he didn't do anything until after the fans started celebrating.bluehenbillk wrote:Imagine the uproar today if Detroit had won that game in OT last night. It was the ref behind the play - the one that eventually made the no-goal hand motion. He did blow the whistle before that, but again, the entire play was in front of him. Way to interject yourself in a situation that he didn't belong. It all worked out in the end, but still a brutal call.bodoyle wrote:I almost lost it when they disallowed that goal. Re: Obligatory NHL Playoff Thread
I know I'm going to get killed for saying this, but you're wrong. You can't ref the game based on the situation. Any ref who thinks, "There's a breakaway, better not make a call here." or "It's late in the 3rd period, shouldn't make a call" is a gutless worm who shouldn't be refereeing. You ref the game on the rules as you see it, as they are defined, independent of time and place. If you really think you should not make penalty calls late in tight games, why do refs call stuff like pass interference, travelling, or balks late in games of their respective sport. Why bother? You should let the players decide it. That's the argument I'm reading here. I'm all for players deciding the outcome, provided they do it within the rules of the game.bluehenbillk wrote:Imagine the uproar today if Detroit had won that game in OT last night. Whether or not you think the call was right or not, the team that got "screwed" won, so it's a moot point as far as I am concerned.
Now, as to whether it was roughing or not...I'd listen to arguments about that.
Give me the Kings in 6. All they have to do is steal a game in Chicago and it's lights out for the Hawks. The Kings have been unbeatable at home lately...something like 12-13 straight wins in Staples.
As for the East, my head says it should be Pittsburgh, but something just feels wrong about that. My gut says Boston. That being said, I picked LA-Pit before the playoffs, so I'll stick with that I guess. (Though I'd rather see a Boston-LA hockey series.)

Agreed. The laughable 'officiating' in the NBA is one of many reasons I don't give the NBA a second thought anymore.rkwittem wrote:I know I'm going to get killed for saying this, but you're wrong. Re: Obligatory NHL Playoff Thread
I understand what you're saying but I look at it from a different perspective. I realize that it's subjective but if the foul occurs away from the play and does not impact the play, should you call it immediately? Or do you let them take their shot and then blow the whistle? For example, in a basketball game if a player intercepts a pass in the last seconds of a tie game and is going in for the game-winning layup, do you call the foul if a player at the other end shoves another player? You need to be aware of the situation and allow for continuation of play, otherwise a team could commit a foul away from the puck in order to prevent a likely goal.rkwittem wrote:I know I'm going to get killed for saying this, but you're wrong. Right or wrong call, that's not relevant in this situation and hockey rules account for your concern. Once there is a penalty ready to be called, the referee raises his hand. The hand stays up until the penalized team controls the puck.UNI88 wrote:I understand what you're saying but I look at it from a different perspective. In this situation, since the Hawks had the puck and had a penalty called on them (wings as well but that is irrelevant for this example), the whistle was rightfully blown right away. Had it only been a penalty on the Wings, the play would have continued until the goal was scored (and no penalty would have been assessed because the goal would have wiped out the penalty)

Re: Obligatory NHL Playoff Thread
I am a Ranger fan but Torts had to go. I used to think you hated him unless he was on your team but it seems that he has alienated the team based on comments I have heard (nothing direct) since the termination. Sather got him some goal scorers and he was unable to get the team to score. The King's contract is up next year and he already said he is unsure if he wants to sign a long term extension. Lots of thought is that is because he has carried the team and the team is not scoring. They need to re-sign him or it's time to start rebuilding.dal4018 wrote:Plenty of ppl felt that the GM Glen Sather should have been terminated as opposed to Tortorella. He more success with him than any other coach he hired.Made the playoffs 4 out of 6 yrs as Rangers Coach including a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.89Hen wrote: Wish I could say I felt bad for the guy.
