San Jose police: Sabotage caused phone outage in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz counties

Santa Clara County officials have declared a local emergency after they said someone intentionally cut an underground fiber optic cable in south San Jose, causing a widespread phone service outage in southern Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties today that included disruption to 911 emergency phone service.

John Britton, a spokesman for AT&T, said it appears somebody opened a manhole in South San Jose, climbed down eight to 10 feet and cut four or five fiber-optic cables.Britton also said there was a report of underground cables being cut in San Carlos.

San Jose police spokesman Sgt. Ronnie Lopez said the manhole covers are heavy and would take quite an effort to lift, perhaps even requiring a tool.

AT&T's contract with the Communication Workers of America expired at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, but Britton said "we have a really good relationship with the union" and that negotiations continue between the two sides.

Asked if the potential sabotage had anything to with the strike-threatened contract negotiations between AT&T and the Communication Workers of America, union national spokeswoman Candice Johnson replied: "Absolutely not. Our members are not involved in this."

CWA members at AT&T operations voted by an 88 percent yes vote to authorize a strike if a fair contract isn't reached. CWA represents about 125,000 workers covered by these contracts:

AT&T East, Connecticut, 5,000, and AT&T East Yellow Pages, 300.

AT&T Southeast, in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, 37,000. (contract expires Aug. 8)

AT&T Midwest, in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin, 20,000 and AT&T DataCom, 500.

AT&T Southwest, in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas, 30,200.

AT&T West, in California and Nevada, 23,000.

AT&T Legacy, covering 10,000 workers nationwide.

TMan, did you post anything about the pickets at the SEIU Headquarters? SEIU laid off about 75 of their own staff and the union that represented them filed an unfair labor practices charge and picketed their headquarters.

This may seem light hearted, but if you read the article, you'd know the sabotage took out 911 systems for several major cities for over a day. It's a safe presumption, that in the dense region that was effected, there were major crimes, violence, and property damage that resulted due to the systems being down...

...and I suspect there will be an investigation by the regional agencies compiling statistics of those incidents...

...and the report will never see the light of day..

...because that region has one of the highest concentrations of union management (headquarters/locals) in the U.S.

Actually T-man, the Chairman Mao comment was directed at GRIZ - if he is putting away american union made clothes, he is likely buying Chinese.

And I am not minimizing this. Whoever did this needs to be caught, and sent to jail.

And if there is any indication that it was not a single person, acting alone, all accomplices need to be charged as well.

I agree that a number of TMan's recent posts make appear that he is desperately looking for anything that makes Obama look bad but on this subject he has a valid point. IMO, this incident needs to be looked into and the perpetrators prosecuted to the furthest extent of the law. It's domestic terrorism and they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it. Obama is ultimately responsible for the FBI, Homeland Security, etc. and how diligently they look into this incident is one of many things that will reflect his competency and integrity as a leader.

You need my '75 Dodge Power Wagon with 440, Offenhauser intake, Carter AFB carb., recurved distributor, and dual exhaust. Back in the day rednecks would snap to attention and salute when the Beast came down the street......of course being a good tree-hugger meant changing to locking hubs and increasing gas mileage from 6 mpg to 9mpg.
