Hypothetical question
If you came into a boat load of money (lottery, inheritance, whatever) which social, religous or political groups or non-profits would you donate to, if any.
My only two would be the Humane Society & Planned Parenthood.
I am a sucker for helping animals & I think Planned Parenthood does great things for women & families who can't afford to take care of their family planning needs.

Re: Hypothetical question
I would donate to the local audubon society and in nashville for youth environmental education programs, to NAU for scholarships
Re: Hypothetical question
How much are we talking? I'll put my number as a lotto number because I have no money anywhere in my family.
I'll go with a 50 million in the lotto.
Pay off college loans for me and thebetterhalf
Buy a nice house for us
2 new cars
new house for both sets of parents
spoil ourselves.
Let's say we go all out on that stuff and are left with 25 million. I invest 3 million in a Roth IRA, 10 million to UNI through Panther Scholarship Club, Alumni Association, and other donations. Maybe donate to a new dome without my name attached to it in the dome name...maybe just a plaque or something. Then i would do 3 million to the humane society in whatever state I'm in at that point, and 1 million to the foster care system.

Jimmy Fund/Other childrens hospitals.
I would also look into donating money to group homes for developmentally disabled adults.

Re: Hypothetical question
depending on the amount -
1. Circle of Champions donor to NDSU
2. fund an expansion of NDSU's Political Science program. if the money was big enough a school of public administration.
3. Top tier donor politically - the federal maximum for a 2 year cycle is $115,600... and I've already portioned it out in my head.
4. camp wellstone
5. buy and restore the old Minneapolis Armory... a WPA building an amazing place
6. (if i was like Warren Buffet rich) Infrastructure in Africa (to enable the distribution of aid and improvement of economies and by extension health, welfare and security)

Re: Hypothetical question
Depending on how much there is:
1. Go back to my home town, a small town of 1300 people in NW Iowa, walk into the City Manager's office and say, "what do you need?" I know they need a new swimming pool and have a couple of other projects they would like to do if they had the money.
2. Go to my high school and start a scholarship fund for every graduate.
3. Give a big chunk to the local school district for the new high school we are building.
4. Establish an endowment for the public administration program at UNI.
5. Contribute to UNI athletics.
6. Give some to the community where I live now for some community projects.

What I would really do
Go buy a house on Lake Okoboji.
Buy a boat so f'ing big it would swamp your boat when I drove by.
Buy two jet skis
Buy about 100 acres of Iowa farmland and convert it into my own playground for the ATVs I would buy.
Buy a Cadillac STS-V
Buy a new GMC pickup
Buy a Corvette
Get my wife a boob job. (ok this would be first)
Buy a bunch more shit.
Then maybe think of moving on to my list.

Re: Hypothetical question
Our local food bank
A "soup kitchen" for the poor in downtown Wilmington
The Delaware equivalent of the United Way that supports a number of DE nonprofits
We already support each of these charities financially, but we would do even more if we could.

Yeah, I put that on there, but I'm just as likely to just buy a bunch of land and you'll never hear from me again.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:... even if you have your own pac... 10,000 a year IIRC is the maximum.ASUMountaineer wrote:I would donate:

The Center for Consumer Freedom
I'd start my own organization dedicated to real common sense education reforms to act as a counterbalance to the special interests and politicians that fight common sense reforms.
I'd start a secular anti-abortion organization which is badly needed.
I'd also start an organization that is dedicated to demanding tighter restrictions on psychiactric drugs and promoting some actual scientific rigor in psychiatry.
GSU's athletic foundation and STEM departments.
