I'm not arguing that these guys are innocent. But by unilaterally taking away rights negotiated under the CBA makes it sound like Selig is turning into Goodell: i.e. abuse of power. I wouldn't be surprised if the MLBPA ends up suing Selig. A lifetime ban isn't going to stand up in court if they denied the right of appeal.

Whatever one thinks about these guys, this is NOT the right way to go about it. Sure, PEDs are bad for the game, but this is worse, IMO. Power-hungry idiots running the show. This has GOT to stop....
Shocker, I disagree with SH. Show me how cheating is not more harmful to the game than gambling and I'll agree. The fact that A-Roid, aka A-Fraud, doesn't deserve a lifetime ban, but Pete Rose does is nonsense. All of these cheaters have done more to harm the integrity of the game than Pete Rose ever did. Baseball...it's a joke.
Read it again, ASU. That's not what I said at all. Sure, I'd like to see them banned for life for PEDs. It's the denial of the appeals process Selig's using here that's going to come back to bite him in the butt. That's all I'm saying. These guys will sue for lack of due process and probably win. All they had to do was hand down an appropriate suspension, hear the appeal, deny the appeal, the suspension goes through, and everyone's happy. Where the heck did I say that Rose DOES deserve a lifetime ban? I've thought for years Rose got railroaded by Bart Giamatti and Fay Vincent, and then Pearl Harbored by that jerkoff Jim Gray (who ought to be kicked out of sports "journalism" for life for what he did at the bloody All Star Game).

Get the facts straight before you try blowing me up, ASU. It doesn't work....

If you don't post the facts, all we can do is try to understand your implications.

I am glad that I did post what I did because I actually agree with your post. They deserve a lifetime ban, and they are going through the appeals process...FYI. A-Roid is still playing, and probably will for the rest of the season. The best part about that, is it is infuriating to Yankmee fans!

The way I read it, MLB said something to the effect of, "If you appeal, we're going to stick it to you even worse." That's not the way CBAs work. Now, if they were called in, shown the suspension, and they agreed to it on the spot, there wouldn't be any problem with that. But the way the articles were written, the ultimatum came WITH the suspension notice. THAT is unethical at best (not that doing PEDs is, either), and illegal at worst.

This point is completely separate from whether or not suspensions are warranted; they are. You just have to go through the proper process, and it appears that MLB did NOT do that....

Sounds like they were given an option, and made a deal with MLB after reviewing the options with their lawyers. These are millionaires, they made a deal, lawyers on both sided involved.

If that's truly the case, Gil, that's perfectly fine. But the articles I read made it out to be a straight up ultimatum, which I'm not certain will hold up if the players/union sue.

Of course, if there's a legal/ethical way to get them out PERMANENTLY, that's probably the way to go. 'Roids only work if you have talent to assist, but you have to have SOME innate talent to get to the Bigs to begin with. If there's something to work with, then 'roids can REALLY wreak havoc with the game. So I agree that anyone caught OUGHT to be punished; where I draw the line, though, is how one goes about that because one MUST make sure there are no backdoors for the perps to get off...

The players union advised them not to appeal and to accept it. You have no idea what you're talking about....again

What the MLB could do, and should, is turn all of the evidence and cases over to the police and have them all charged with using illegal drugs - since it isn't just the MLB that has them illegal.
