A rural Bedford couple was asleep in bed Monday night when an escaped convicted felon broke into their home west of Bedford.

The couple, Jerome and Carolyn Mauderly, 71 and 66, respectively, were held in their bedroom as Rodney Eugene Long, 38, wandered through their home and used their cell phone. Officials did not say who Long called.

Long, who was armed with a semi-automatic handgun, had escaped from the Clarinda Correctional Facility early Friday morning. He allegedly shot a Taylor County deputy Sunday night and led police on a 40-minute chase, triggering a massive man hunt in southwest Iowa Monday. The chase ended with Long’s escape within a mile of the Mauderlys’ home.

Police on Monday searched the Mauderly home for Long three times as well as other homes in the area. The last search was done at 11 a.m. Monday.

At about 10:15 p.m. Monday, Long broke into the small, one-story home, abutted by cornfields in an isolated area on Highland Avenue west of Bedford.

Long disabled the phones in the Mauderlys’ home; police suspect Long was gathering supplies to aid his continued escape.

Officials said the Mauderlys, who had a shotgun somewhere in their house, decided after four hours being held hostage in their bedroom to do something.

“As the situation wore on, a decision was made by the Mauderlys that they were going to defend themselves,” Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Mitch Mortvedt said during a news conference today.

Somehow – officials did not elaborate – the Mauderlys were able to get their shotgun and Jerome Mauderly shot Long.

Carolyn Mauderly called law enforcement at 2:11 a.m. On a call two minutes later, Carolyn Mauderly told police that a man had been shot. A trooper who was nearby on another call responded almost immediately.

Long was shot and killed in the Mauderlys kitchen. Police found him lying face down, they said. Officials said he had one wound. The Mauderlys were uninjured.

And thanks to the Mauderly's for saving the taxpayers of Iowa a bunch of money.

MISSOULA - Authorities say that a 77-year-old Missoula homeowner shot an intruder early Sunday morning.

Missoula Police say the homeowner called 9-1-1 just before 2 a.m. to report he had shot an intruder.

Officers arrived on scene and say they found a 22-year-old man had been shot once in the torso inside the home, which is in the downtown Missoula area.

Authorities say in a news release that the man was taken to St. Patrick Hospital, where he is now listed in serious condition.

Man, 91, shoots suspect in neck during armed robbery attempt

EASTPOINTE, Mich. – A 91-year-old man has shot and wounded another man during an apparent robbery attempt outside a Detroit-area store.

Eastpointe police say the intended victim was leaving his vehicle Monday morning when he was approached by another man who was behaving in an erratic manner.

The 91-year-old told the second man that he had a concealed pistol license.

Sgt. Martin Campbell tells The Detroit News that the elderly man warned the second man "three or four times and even had the gun pointed at him ... but the suspect kept coming and pointed an unknown object at the victim."

The second man was shot in the neck. He has been hospitalized and is in police custody.

Campbell says the shooting is being investigated as self-defense during an attempted armed robbery.
