...and it's nowhere near over yet.
First, the debacle in Tempe. Then the humiliation of opening the HS season with a 68-13 loss at home. It wasn't just the butt-whipping that bites, though. It was the horrible officiating (not that it would have helped) and the blatant intentional running up of the score. There is absolutely NO reason to be up over 50 late in the 4th quarter with your starting O still in the game and running fades. That's absolutely DISGUSTING. That's not how you play football in my book.
The horrible officiating? I understand that it was the first game of the season with no pre-season, but when your punt clearly contacts the return man's leg, when the kicking team recovers, it's the kicking team's ball. That had to be the stupidest call of the night, but there were others, including a clearly made-up horse-collar call. That's not to say that all the bad calls were against us; there were plenty of zebra screw-ups to give to everyone. That punt was just one of the worst calls I've ever seen.
We had some incredibly inept play on our own part, too. The quarterback was pretty good on the option, but he had ZERO trajectory on his throws; everything was on a line, and that played a key role in several picks, including at least one that was taken all the way back. Our newly re-installed Wing-T did NOT match well against Sheldon's spread, which clicked to perfection. (Of course, I wouldn't pick EITHER offense; I'm more of an I-based West Coast guy, based on my time in HS and UOP/Sac.) THEN there was the idiot who let the blowout get to his head, leading to his ejection after taking a cheap shot on the Sheldon quarterback. There's no place for THAT in football, either. Were I coaching, that kid would be turning in his gear on Monday....
My Lodi Flames understandably made the mistake of scheduling one of the biggest powers in the Sac-Joaquin Section, but if THIS is the way we're going to play, we're in for a long season in our first year with a new coach. Losses like this REALLY hurt....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
