University of South Dakota to join Summit League
The University of South Dakota will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. this afternoon in Vermillion to announce its athletic programs will join the 10-school Summit League beginning in 2011.
On Tuesday, the league’s Presidents Council voted unanimously to invite the school into the conference beginning July 1, 2011, according to an email sent to Summit League member schools. USD will not compete in team tournaments that season, the last that the Coyotes are ineligible for NCAA postseason competitions.
In 2012-13 USD will be an active member of NCAA Division I and will participate in Summit League tournaments.
USD announced it would lift its athletic programs from NCAA Division II to Division I in 2006 and is now competing as a Division I independent.

This doesn't affect football. They will stay in the GWFC for Football.
UND will not get an invite until they settle the nickname issue.

Re: University of South Dakota to join Summit League
They will become an all sports member so this hurts GWC all-sports legitimacy.

I am not talking about football. I am saying this is going to hurt the GWC as an all-sports conference. USD/UND were supposed to help be backbones to the conference.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:summit doesn't sponsor football... can't imagine USD leaving GWFC without an invite from the Mo. Bakersfield is in the Cal State system, not the UC system. I am unsure of what athletics they sponsor (I know they don’t have football), but I imagine they will be invited into the Big West when/if they will meet the requirements.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:i keep forgetting that... isn't the GW just a mish-mash of every independent left in college hoops?dgreco wrote:

Schools that will probably join the GWC in 2011 when the Moratorium is up....
Grand Canyon
Oklahoma City

Re: University of South Dakota to join Summit League
if the moratorium has a few teams ie. Monmouth, CCSU become full sports members in another conference, new or AE, I think NJIT and Longwood would both be invited to the NEC. I am sure the A-Sun wishes they had Longwood now, or the Big South.

Re: University of South Dakota to join Summit League
I wonder if the A-Sun will wait until 2011 to add W.Florida who is looking at moving up. N.Kentucky too (a bit north though). I know that LeMoyne wants in the AEC in 2011.
Are you hearing something about CCSU and Monmouth joining the AEC?

Re: University of South Dakota to join Summit League
nothing about Monmouth, but CCSU to AEC just makes a lot of sense. mid-sized public university, they will help bring football and it will be more of a fit than the NEC.

Re: University of South Dakota to join Summit League
Not good news for the Great West Conference.
I wonder if the invite for 2011 has something to do with an expected departure by one of the existing ten teams in the Summit League. 11 is a strange number. Perhaps just hedging their bets if somebody leaves and if nobody leaves, UND would jump at a Summit League invite, pretty much guaranteeing 12.

Good first post and I'm pretty sure you are the first Utah Valley guy on the board.

The Summit (MidContenent) has been an unstable league with teams constantly moving in and out. I had nobody in mind, just wondering if there isn't more movement because of the historical instability.

Ideal would be to lose the Indiana/Michigan schools, add UVU and UND (over time, of course).

Re: University of South Dakota to join Summit League
Some would say it would be more ideal to lose Southern Utah. Oakland, IPFW, and IUPUI are at least fairly close to each other, with similar missions.
