You do remember the FIVE people killed by ANTRAX, do you not? The tea was loose. The LE was merely doing their job.
Bullsh!t.

The envelope had been marked "Tea Protest" on the outside. Shea-Porter's staff were merely abusing their positions as representative staff members in an attempt to draw negative light to the protest and start trouble.

If they really were genuinely in fear of the contents (which they were not), I would assert that their frame of mind is unsound (which could well be the case, as staff members for Sh1t-for-brains Shea-Porter, a bought and paid for union shill candidate). BTW, here's two local union mob bosses leaving her campaign headquarters last year...

I dare you to listen to this from 2:10 until the end...when the Union president "slips" and expresses his TRUE feelings... :o

I know too many congressional staffs to buy one bit of this bs T...

I've called the bomb squad in for less on campaigns (someone once mailed Sen. Wellstone's campaign a brick wrapped in newspaper less than a year after 9-11... it was pretty f'ing scary not know what it was)

Until you've opened a letter with powder in it... a letter addressed to an elected official... you really can't understand why this is such a big deal... but it is.

You've got to understand the raw quantity of completely crazy shit that gets sent to elected officials. There's the crazy stuff from people who actually mentally ill... then there are the paranoid types with their 14 page screeds scrawled out in crayon... then there are the astroturf postcards with nasty little comments scrawled on them...

all of this is in a standard day... and all of it (up to a point) is Constitutionally protected speech (and rightly so I might add... it may be insane... but it's your right). however, when people start sending biological agents (of any kind) people tend to start getting nervous... esp. after the five deaths earlier this decade.

On top of ALL OF THAT the guy was only QUESTIONED... not arrested, not detained... nothing like that at all. it's pretty logical thing to do actually... talk to the guy find out what possesed him to do something so thoughtless (not the protest... the manner of it) and if his answer is anything to do with an objection to tax policy, and doesn't end with "you'll see, you'll all be sorry!!! I'll get you for this!" then that's the end of that... he goes on about his business, and next time it's a bag of tea instead of something that could be confused for a biological agent.

I have. And more.

This was either a "game" to her staff...or they're morons.

But since you are hanging your hat on the 9-11 anthrax incident... :?

Do you also avoid going near tall office buildings?

nope... i also continue to open political campaign mail. But I'm keenly aware of what happened... and so is everyone who has ever gotten a briefing on mail procedures at the House and Senate. You get mail from cranks and random weirdos, and you have no way of knowing what's in it, or the intent of the sender. once you have specifically been targeted like that... and colleagues have died from it... it's not a game... it's serious.

the same way any dingus who "cracks a joke" about hijacking a plane and using it as a missle in an airport is going to have a conversation with the TSA... and rightly so... this guy will get a visit to find out what his intent was... it appears it was harmless... but it wasn't too damn bright.

Sorry to hear that.

Which "colleagues" died?

The five who died:

Robert Stevens a reporter
Kathy Nguyen, a New York City hospital worker
Thomas L. Morris Jr. and Joseph P. Curseen - postal workers
Ottilie Lundgren - a private citizen in Connecticut...

these weren't my colleagues... in fact, they were "collateral damage" in an attack targeting members of congress..

a number of people I'm good friends with worked for Daschle and Feingold at the time and were exposed to it... they had to go through the whole thing of being treated for it...

You mean take cipraflaxin for 4 weeks?

Of the 32 from the Senate Hart Building who were treated for exposure, none developed any significant infections (at least, that were publicly released).

I do my homework too, you know.

All of the lethal cases resulted from atomized (inhaled) weaponized grade anthrax, which has been extensively investigated...

...that form of biotoxin is EXTREMELY difficult to manufacture and distribute (as are most "weapon grade" toxins).

Bottomline...

...statistically...

...opening an envelope marked "Tea Protest", during a week when it was public knowledge there was going to be a national "Tea Party Protest" in which citizens were asked to mail "tea" to their elected representatives...

...and having that tea-looking substance turn out to be some form of "toxic substance"...

...makes about as much sense as expecting Pauly Shore to jump out of the envelope and begin acting with talent.

It doesn't appear that this is a big deal. I will say, from my limited experience in law school, that Tman is correct on one thing, if you're questioned (and are not free to get up and leave or make the LE leave) then you are detained, and if you're detained--technically--you've been arrested, but not booked, so to speak (you like the ambiguous legalese?). Other than that, I think this is much ado about nothing. I don't think any of his civil liberties were violated.
